On January 19th, the second day of the 2026 Australian Open saw three Chinese players competing, with one winning and two losing. Shang Juncheng overcame Spanish veteran Bautista Agut in four sets, securing his first Australian Open victory in two years; Bu Yunchaokete fell in three sets to 21st seed Shapovalov, while Yuan Yue was defeated in two sets by second seed Swiatek, both bowing out in round one.

Playing last on Rod Laver Arena, ten-time champion Novak Djokovic showed strong form, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 against Spanish player Martin Martinez. This victory not only gave him a successful start but also marked his 100th match win at the Australian Open. Djokovic’s next opponent in round two will be qualifier Maestreli, who fought through five sets to eliminate Atmanar.

The 11th seed Daniil Medvedev and 12th seed Casper Ruud also advanced in straight sets on Margaret Court Arena. Medvedev, a three-time finalist, bounced back from last year’s second-round upset by defeating De Jong 7-5, 6-2, 7-6(2) in his opening match. Ruud cruised in the night session, beating Berrettini 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, and will face Munar in the second round.

Wildcard entrant and 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka battled for 3 hours and 20 minutes to overturn Serbian player Djere 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4), earning his first main draw win at the Australian Open in five years. Wawrinka will face young qualifier Zeya in the next round, who defeated 17th seed Lehecka in straight sets. Additionally, 6th seed Dominic Thiem, 13th seed Rublev, 19th seed Paul, and 2018 finalist Cilic all progressed smoothly.

Besides Lehecka, three other seeded men were eliminated today. 7th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime retired while trailing 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, giving Borges the win. 24th seed Lindgren lost 3-6, 4-6, 7-6(2), 4-6 to Marosan; 27th seed Brandon Nakashima was defeated 3-6, 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-7(3) by VandeSchoor, who will face Shang Juncheng in round two.

In women’s singles, 2nd seed Iga Swiatek defeated Yuan Yue 7-6(5), 6-3; 3rd seed Coco Gauff beat Rashimova 6-2, 6-3; 4th seed Anisimova won 6-3, 6-2 over Waltert; 6th seed Pegula comfortably defeated Zakharova 6-2, 6-1, all advancing smoothly. 8th seed Andreyeva faced some resistance but came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 against Vikic, also moving on.

13th seed Noskova swept Semenistaya 6-3, 6-0; 14th seed Tauson defeated Gauff 6-3, 6-3; 17th seed Mboko beat local wildcard E. Jones 6-4, 6-1; last year’s semifinalist Badosa won 6-2, 6-4 over Diaz, all securing opening round wins. The 23rd seed Schneider faced a tough match against two-time Grand Slam champion Kvitova, who after winning the first set suffered a knee injury and eventually lost 6-2, 3-6, 3-6, resulting in an upset.
In a dramatic match, Filipino fan favorite Ella lost after winning the first set 6-0 against American Parker, then dropping the next two sets 3-6, 2-6, missing out on advancing. Additionally, two seeded women were eliminated in their opening matches: 15th seed Navarro was upset 6-3, 3-6, 3-6 by Linette, and 27th seed and 2020 champion Kenin lost 3-6, 2-6 to compatriot Stearns.
