Former world No.1 in women's doubles and Taiwanese star Latisha Chan has announced her retirement!

This week, as attention centers on the Australian Open, Taiwanese player Latisha Chan has publicly declared her retirement on her social media, ending her 30-year journey in professional tennis.

Born in 1989, Chan showed promising talent during her junior years, winning the girls' doubles title at the 2004 Australian Open alongside Chinese player Sun Shengnan. Despite being relatively slow on the court, her power and explosiveness combined with rich technical skills made her a formidable competitor.

In her early years, Chan had a steady partnership with Chinese star Zheng Jie; this cross-strait duo reached the women's doubles final at the 2015 Australian Open, where they were defeated by the strong team of Mattek-Sands and Safarova. She also teamed up with her sister for an extended period, but her most outstanding doubles partner was arguably Martina Hingis.

At the 2017 US Open, Chan and Hingis claimed the women's doubles title, marking Chan’s first Grand Slam doubles championship. The pair went on to win several other tournaments together, including the Wuhan Open, China Open, and Hong Kong events.

On October 23, 2017, Chan became the world No.1 in women's doubles, holding the top spot for a total of 34 weeks. Besides her impressive doubles achievements, she also earned three Grand Slam mixed doubles titles.

At the 2018 French Open, Chan teamed up with Michael Venus to narrowly defeat the top seeds Dabrowski and Pavic, securing her first Grand Slam mixed doubles championship.

However, in recent seasons, injuries and age-related issues have kept Chan away from the tour. Her most recent appearance was at the 2024 Palermo Open, where she partnered with Zhang Shuai to reach the women's doubles semifinals, eventually losing to the top seeds Panova and Siniakova.

Looking at Chan’s overall career, her achievements include reaching No.1 in women's doubles, one Grand Slam women's doubles title, three Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, and 33 women's doubles titles — a truly remarkable record. Naturally, her career has also been surrounded by some controversies.

Whether it was the name change controversy (in 2018, she officially registered her name as "Latisha Chan" with the WTA) or rumors about signing with a record label and possibly entering the entertainment industry, these topics sparked widespread discussion.
