A 29-year-old WTA player has tested positive for three banned substances and faces severe penalties.

In contemporary sports, testing positive for banned substances is regarded as one of the most critical red lines. Therefore, according to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Friday, Croatian tennis player Jana Fett has been temporarily suspended for detecting "three banned substances."

The 29-year-old athlete, currently ranked 189th in the world, provided the sample during the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier held in Varaždin, Croatia, last November. The ITIA stated in a release that the player has the right to appeal the provisional suspension before an independent arbitrator. "So far, Fett has not filed an appeal," the agency confirmed.

The banned substances identified by ITIA include: Ostarine, which promotes muscle growth; LGD-4033, known to increase lean body mass and has anabolic effects; and GW501516 (also called GW1516), a compound linked to rapid cancer development in mouse studies and discontinued from research in 2007.

Fett’s provisional suspension took effect on December 22, 2025, explaining why she has not competed this season. Her last tournament was an ITF event in Italy in early December, where she exited in the quarterfinals.

Currently, the 29-year-old is Croatia’s fourth-ranked female singles player and has reached the main draw of Grand Slams five times, advancing to the second round at the 2018 Australian Open and 2024 French Open. She has also won 10 ITF singles titles, including the notable 2024 Oeiras Open. Furthermore, Fett’s former management agency did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

During the provisional suspension, Fett is prohibited from participating in, training for, or attending any tennis events organized by ITIA members, including ATP, ITF, WTA, Grand Slams, and all activities hosted by national tennis associations.

The Croatian Tennis Association confirmed receiving notification about Jana Fett’s positive doping test as a national team player. "This is all the information we currently have on the matter," said Zdravko Marić, president of the Croatian Tennis Association. "From my knowledge of Jana, she is an extremely fair athlete, and I sincerely believe she ingested the banned substances unintentionally rather than to gain any competitive advantage. We will maintain communication with Jana and the ITIA."

Shortly after, Fett herself responded with a statement aligning with the Croatian Tennis Association’s position. A few hours ago, she posted on Instagram: "Hi friends, as many of you already know, I am currently involved in an ongoing anti-doping case and am fully cooperating with the authorities. I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substances and have always stood firmly for clean and fair sport."

She further added that she is actively working to clear her name: "I am closely collaborating with my advisory team and the ITIA to prove my innocence. Thank you all for your understanding and support." At present, Fett is fully cooperating with the investigation and determined to prove her integrity.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Spark)
