Day 8 at the Australian Open: Alcaraz Advances Smoothly, Jovic Reaches Quarterfinals for the First Time

On January 25, 2026, Beijing time, the first week of the Australian Open concluded, with the battle for the men's and women's singles quarterfinal spots intensifying.

Sabalenka

The first to appear was the women's world No.1 Sabalenka, who confronted the young Canadian Mboko. Sabalenka showed incredible control, quickly winning the opening set 6-1. Though the second set reached a tiebreak, the younger contender failed to create further chances. After this match, the Belarusian's Grand Slam tiebreak record extended to an impressive 20 consecutive wins.

Alcaraz

Next up was the men's world No.1 Alcaraz from Spain, who won in straight sets 7-6(6)/6-4/7-5 against the 19th seed Paul. This marks his third consecutive year reaching the Australian Open quarterfinals; he previously fell in the quarterfinals to Djokovic in 2025 and to Zverev in 2024. He hopes to advance further this year.

Jovic

On the women's side, 18-year-old American rising star Jovic took less than an hour to dominate Putintseva 6-0/6-1 and reach the quarterfinals, continuing to improve her best Grand Slam performance. Third seed Gauff resisted Muhova’s challenge, using relentless movement and tough defense to secure a hard-fought 6-1/3-6/6-3 victory and advance. Twelfth seed Svitolina defeated eighth seed Andreyeva 6-2/6-4, reaching the Grand Slam quarterfinals for the 14th time in her career, demonstrating sustained high-level competitiveness.

In the men's singles, the highly anticipated "Medvedev vs. Qian" match did not turn into the marathon many expected. Lerner Qian won in straight sets 6-4/6-0/6-3, including an 11-game streak mid-match, almost handing Medvedev a “double bagel.” With this victory, Qian has beaten his opponent at the Australian Open for two consecutive years and reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. He will next face Zverev, who also won in three sets 6-2/6-4/6-4 against 18th seed Cerundolo.

Local favorite Deminal achieved a “sweet revenge” over Bublyk, winning 6-4/6-1/6-1 in front of the home crowd, erasing last year’s two consecutive losses (2025 French Open and 2025 Paris Masters). His next opponent will be Alcaraz.

In doubles, the experienced duo Zhang Shuai and Mertens gave their opponents a lesson. Overcoming a 0-5 deficit in the first set and saving three match points in the final set, they staged a stunning comeback to win 7-5/4-6/7-6(10) against the young pair Jovic and Mboko, advancing to the women's doubles round of 16.

Zhang Shuai

The junior tournament continued its first-round matches today, with eight main draw players achieving an even 4-4 record: Sun Xinran defeated Li Xian 6-4/6-2; Zhang Ruien beat Jetlentieva 6-1/3-6/6-3; Shao Yushan won over Joffrey 6-1/6-4; Qu Yihan overcame Kokinis 6-4/7-5. Geng Xinle lost to Yefremova 3-6/0-6; Wei Zhangqian fell to Sushkova 6-7(1)/4-6; Lin Yujun was defeated by M. Makarova 5-7/6-4/3-6; Kang Kai lost to Jovanovski 1-6/6-7(5).
