The first half of Nole's quest for his 25th Grand Slam title at this year's Australian Open is going smoothly.
Novak Djokovic reaches the quarterfinals effortlessly Australian Open 2026 after his opponent in the round of 16, Jakub Mensik, was forced to withdraw due to injury and could not compete.
According to the schedule, Djokovic and Mensik were set to face off in the evening session at Rod Laver Arena on January 26. However, the 20-year-old Czech player reported an abdominal issue and decided to pull out, allowing Djokovic to advance without exerting any effort.
Mensik had just won a tense third-round match against American Ethan Quinn with scores of 6-2, 7-6(5), 7-6(5) on January 24. The 2025 Miami Open champion revealed that a worsening abdominal muscle injury in recent matches prevented him from continuing at the season's first Grand Slam.
"This is very difficult news to share. After doing everything possible to keep playing, I have to withdraw from the Australian Open due to the worsening abdominal muscle injury.", Mensik wrote on Instagram. "After thorough discussions with my coaching team and doctors, we decided not to compete tomorrow."
The withdrawal is a major blow for Jakub Mensik, one of the most promising young talents in men's tennis. This was his first time reaching the round of 16 at a Grand Slam.
"Although disappointed, reaching the fourth round here for the first time is something I will always remember. I felt a lot of energy from the fans, and the atmosphere in Melbourne was truly special.", Mensik added.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic received a huge advantage on his path to a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title in men's singles history. The 38-year-old has yet to lose a set at this Australian Open and will enjoy an extra rest day before the quarterfinal against Lorenzo Musetti or Taylor Fritz.
After his win over Botic van de Zandschulp on January 24, Djokovic revealed he deliberately limited training on rest days to conserve energy.
"I think I’m still moving well. There’s always something going on with the body, but overall I feel better than ever.", Nole said. "I can’t predict the future, but I’m doing everything I can."
Djokovic and Mensik previously met in the Miami Open final last year, where the young Czech player served exceptionally well to defeat his biggest idol and claim his first ATP Tour title.
