The quarterfinal stage of this year's Australian Open is expected to be very thrilling with the presence of leading tennis stars.
The first Grand Slam of the year - Australian Open 2026 has reached its halfway point. After a series of exciting and intense matches, the best players who have qualified for the men’s and women’s singles quarterfinals have officially been revealed.
The reigning two-time Australian Open champion - Jannik Sinner confirmed his strength with a 3-0 victory over fellow countryman Luciano Darderi. Sinner’s journey was not without challenges, especially in the third round match against Eliot Spizzirri.
Despite being heavily favored, Sinner faced difficulties due to the very high temperatures in Melbourne, suffering leg cramps that spread to his arm and risking being overtaken by Spizzirri in the third set. At this critical moment, the organizers decided to close the roof as the temperature exceeded the allowed limit.
The break was enough for the current world No. 2 to recover, regain his breath and stamina, and then defeat Spizzirri in four sets.
Sinner’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be Ben Shelton, who defeated Casper Ruud in the latest fourth-round match.
Meanwhile, the biggest obstacle for Jannik Sinner in his quest for a third consecutive title - Carlos Alcaraz continues to shine, having not lost a set since the start of the tournament, most recently beating Tommy Paul in a relatively straightforward manner. Carlitos will face Australia’s top hope - Alex De Minaur in the last eight.
Similarly to Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic has had a smooth run at the 2026 Australian Open, except for nearly being disqualified in the third round against Botic Van De Zandschulp. Nole even has a physical advantage over other competitors by skipping the fourth round after Jakub Mensik withdrew.
Djokovic will face Lorenzo Musetti, who defeated Taylor Fritz in just three sets, recreating the thrilling final of the Hellenic Championship from late last year.
The remaining quarterfinal match features the defending runner-up Alexander Zverev against the young American player Learner Tien.
In the women’s singles, the highlight of the quarterfinals will be the clash between the current world No. 2 Iga Swiatek and the "beauty" Elena Rybakina. The other matchups are: Aryna Sabalenka against the rising star Iva Jovic, a U.S. internal battle between Amanda Anisimova and Jessica Pegula, along with the match between Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina.
The 2026 Australian Open quarterfinal matches will take place starting January 27, Vietnam time.
