Djokovic responds to Wilander, acknowledging the strength of the new generation but refusing to back down; the Australian Open will reveal the true battle.

Outside the 2026 Australian Open, Djokovic and veteran Wilander's verbal exchange has attracted much attention.

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Wilander questioned Djokovic in a column, saying he shouldn’t frequently admit that Alcaraz and Sinner are stronger. He argued that such statements, even if generous, could weaken Djokovic’s competitiveness, appearing to ease pressure but potentially causing people to forget he remains a strong Grand Slam contender. Wilander also described this as Djokovic’s black-and-white approach to life, rather than a deliberate strategy.

In response, 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic took a firm stance, saying, “I have great respect for Wilander, but I don’t need his advice.” He has never shown weakness by acknowledging the new generation. While admitting Alcaraz and Sinner have won four of the last eight major titles and are currently at the top, Djokovic firmly stated he will never surrender and will fight until the very last point.

Although Djokovic has lost five consecutive matches to Sinner (head-to-head 4:6), he still leads his record against Alcaraz 5:4. In 2025, they split two matches evenly, and the same happened in 2024.

At a previous Australian Open press conference, a reporter asked Djokovic something like: “You used to chase Federer and Nadal, now you’re chasing Sinner and Alcaraz. What do you think about that?”

Djokovic confidently replied: “Always? You seem to have forgotten that for almost 15 years, I was the one in control!”

He found the reporter’s question “especially good”! It represented a group of “forgetful” people. Such questions might even fuel Djokovic’s fighting spirit more!

In the Australian Open quarterfinals, Djokovic was close to elimination but advanced only after his opponent Musetti retired due to injury while leading by two sets. This stroke of luck made him cherish the semifinal opportunity even more. He will now face two-time defending champion Sinner, with the winner set to meet Alcaraz or Zverev. Under this new generation siege, the veteran champion faces a tough path ahead.

Djokovic’s statement reflects a clear understanding of his own strength and the resilient spirit of a seasoned player. Recognizing strong opponents shows maturity and respect for reality, while holding onto the will to fight demonstrates confidence. The Australian Open’s intense battles provide the perfect stage for Djokovic to prove himself once again, as he attempts to break through the new generation’s barrier and continue his legend.
