Rafael Nadal has expressed his thoughts on the eagerly awaited Australian Open final featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic this year.
Rafael Nadal will return to Melbourne amid the special atmosphere of the 2026 Australian Open, where he will take part in the Legends Night event on February 1st, Vietnam time, just before the much-anticipated men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
Nadal’s presence adds symbolic weight to the final, viewed as a clash between two generations. When asked about his personal pick, the Spanish legend did not hesitate: he favors young compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, who is on the verge of winning his first Australian Open title.
“In a way, Novak and I have an incredible history of rivalry, competing for the biggest prizes over many years. I wish him all the best.”Rafa told ESPN. However, the “King of Clay” quickly emphasized his special bond with Alcaraz. “Carlos is from my country. I have a great relationship with him. We have competed together at the Olympics and represented Spain’s national team. If I have to support someone, I feel I must support Carlos.”
Nevertheless, the 22-time Grand Slam champion also shows utmost respect for his longtime rival. “If Novak wins, I will be happy for him as well. What he is achieving at this stage of his career is truly remarkable.”Nadal said.
Nadal’s choice carries deep symbolic meaning. Djokovic is his greatest rival, with 60 encounters and a close head-to-head record of 29-31, their last meeting being at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, Alcaraz is seen as the heir to the spirit and legacy of Spanish tennis, known for his energetic style and competitive maturity at a very young age.
The 2026 Australian Open final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic is scheduled for the afternoon of February 1st, Vietnam time.
