Men's Tennis Grand Slam Records Since the Open Era

Rod Laver was the first player to achieve a career Grand Slam and remains the only male player in the Open Era to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam, winning all four major titles in 1969. Previously, Rafael Nadal held the record as the youngest male to complete a career Grand Slam, but 22-year-old Alcaraz broke that record two years earlier.

In tennis history, Steffi Graf is the youngest player (regardless of gender) to complete a career Grand Slam. In 1988, at 19 years old, she secured all four majors and also won the Olympic gold medal that year, achieving the legendary Golden Slam.

Ages at Which Male Players Achieved Career Grand Slams in the Open Era

1. Rod Laver — 31 years old (1969)

This legendary player first completed a career Grand Slam in 1964 before tennis turned professional, so it is not counted in the Open Era records. In 1969, he fulfilled the feat again by winning the Australian Open (defeating Andrés Gimeno), French Open (defeating Ken Rosewall), Wimbledon (defeating John Newcombe), and US Open (defeating Tony Roche). Born on August 8, 1938, he had just turned 31 a month before winning the US Open on September 9 that year.

2. Andre Agassi — 29 years old (1999)

After a 30-year gap, American Andre Agassi became the second male player in the Open Era to achieve a career Grand Slam. He won Wimbledon in 1992, the US Open in 1994, the Australian Open in 1995, and completed the set by winning the French Open in 1999 against Andrei Medvedev, just over two months after his 29th birthday on April 29.

3. Novak Djokovic — 29 years old (2016)

Djokovic is the only male player to have completed a career Grand Slam three times, winning his first French Open in 2016. By then, he already held six Australian Open titles, three Wimbledon titles, and two US Open titles. Having just turned 29 on May 22, he defeated Andy Murray in the French Open final on June 5 to complete his first career Grand Slam, and later repeated this achievement in 2021 and 2023.

4. Roger Federer — 27 years old (2009)

Federer lost three consecutive French Open finals to Nadal before finally triumphing in 2009. At that time, he already held three Australian Open titles, five consecutive Wimbledon titles, and five consecutive US Open titles. Many expected him to face Nadal again in the French Open final, but Nadal was upset in the fourth round by Robin Söderling. Federer then defeated Söderling in straight sets to complete his career Grand Slam.

5. Rafael Nadal — 24 years old (2010)

The King of Clay completed his career Grand Slam at the US Open. By 2010, he had won five French Open titles, one Australian Open (2009), and two Wimbledon titles (2008, 2010). In his first US Open final, he defeated Djokovic in four sets to achieve the career Grand Slam at age 24. In 2022, he won the Australian Open again, securing a double career Grand Slam.

6. Carlos Alcaraz — 22 years old (2026)

In 2025, 21-year-old Alcaraz was just one Australian Open title away from completing his career Grand Slam but was stopped in the quarterfinals. In 2026, he made a comeback, winning a grueling five-hour five-set match against Alexander Zverev and then defeating Djokovic in four sets in the final to fulfill his dream in Melbourne and complete the career Grand Slam.

Currently, Alcaraz holds two French Open titles, two Wimbledon titles, and two US Open titles, and he is expected to challenge for a double career Grand Slam next year.

The story of the 2026 Grand Slam is still unfolding. Sinner currently has two Australian Open titles and one each at Wimbledon and the US Open, with a chance to pursue the career Grand Slam at this year’s French Open. Djokovic holds 10 Australian Open titles, three French Open titles, seven Wimbledon titles, and four US Open titles, so he also has the opportunity to achieve a fourth career Grand Slam at the French Open.
