Alcaraz: 'Nadal is my motivation to overcome challenges'

Carlos Alcaraz managed to surpass tough challenges in the semifinal and final matches to win his maiden Australian Open championship.

The Melbourne title was not only the last missing piece in Alcaraz's Grand Slam collection but also a triumph deeply inspired by the spirit of fellow countryman legend Rafael Nadal.

At 22 years old, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in four sets, ending the Serbian star's unbeaten streak in Australian Open finals. In the stands, Nadal—who has won the tournament twice—watched every moment closely and openly showed his support for the younger player. After the match, Rafa came down to the court to congratulate Alcaraz, embraced him, and offered heartfelt words of encouragement.

"This moment is truly special, but having Rafa in the stands made it even more meaningful.", Carlitos shared. He admitted that Nadal’s image and story served as a source of motivation to help him endure the physical challenges in Melbourne.

Previously, Alcaraz had just finished a grueling five-hour semifinal against Alexander Zverev, fighting cramps and his physical limits. However, he said he often thought about Nadal’s legendary 2009 Australian Open semifinal against Fernando Verdasco—which lasted over five hours—before the "King of Clay" recovered and defeated Roger Federer in the final. "I just thought if Rafa could do that, then I could get through my own struggles.", the world number one said.
