The once-famous tennis star is preparing to return to where she belongs.
What was once considered impossible, or at least just speculation a few months ago, is now increasingly likely to become reality: Serena Williams may return to professional tennis. The legendary American player - who announced her retirement in September 2022 - is reportedly completing the necessary doping tests required by the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) to mark a spectacular comeback.
After the news spread, Serena Williams denied the possibility of a return on social media. However, those statements have not fully dispelled doubts among experts and fans. A few weeks ago, on the The Today Show, when directly asked about her intention to return to the WTA Tour, the 44-year-old player remained ambiguous: "I'm just having fun and enjoying life right now. I don't know, I just want to see what happens."
According to journalist Ben Rothenberg, Serena Williams submitted her name to the ITIA list in August 2025. This means she will be eligible to compete again starting February 22.
The source also indicates that the early registration stemmed from Serena's initial plan to consider participating in last year's US Open. However, ITIA's strict rules — requiring players to register at least six months in advance for doping tests — prevented this plan from happening.
The week starting February 23 has few major tournaments, except for two WTA 250 events at the ATX Open and Merida. Most top players will focus on Indian Wells, a WTA 1000 event starting March 2. This is also seen as the first major tournament where Serena Williams, if she decides to return, could receive a highly attractive wild card entry.
