ATP Rio Open: Fonseca secures his first win of the season, two-time defending champion Baez exits in the first round

On February 17 local time, the first round of the 2026 ATP 500 Rio Open men's singles fully commenced. Homegrown talent and 3rd seed Fonseca triumphed in a Brazilian derby, defeating qualifier Monteiro 7-6(1), 6-1 to claim his first singles tour victory of the season.

Last week, Fonseca was eliminated in the first round while defending his title in Buenos Aires. He admitted afterward that competing as the defending champion brought him considerable pressure, and his physical condition also impacted his performance. Back on home soil in Brazil, Fonseca played steadily, taking the first set in a tiebreak by winning four consecutive points to seal it 7-6(1). In the second set, he unleashed his full power, allowing his opponent only one service hold and closing out the match 6-1. After securing his first win of the season, Fonseca will face Peruvian player Buse in the second round for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Two-time defending champion Baez, seeded 4th, suffered a shocking upset losing 5-7, 1-6 to lucky loser Faria, ending his 10-match winning streak in singles at this event. Argentine siblings Cerundolo both advanced as well. Last week's champion, top seed F. Cerundolo, defeated compatriot Navone 6-3, 6-4; J. Cerundolo upset 2nd seed Darderi 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Italian veteran Berrettini, making his South American comeback, also passed the first round by beating lucky loser Bella 7-6(1), 7-5.
