Bublik: The Big Three are idols but not friends, and it's easier to build a relationship with Sinner.

On March 8, Beijing time, the ATP 1000 Indian Wells Masters entered the men's singles second round. The tournament's 10th seed, Kazakhstan's star player Bublik, after a fierce three-set battle, reversed the match with a score of 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 to defeat lucky loser Kopriva, securing victory in their first career encounter. In the next round, he will face Japanese player Rinki Hijikata, who advanced from the qualifying rounds.

Although the match process had some twists, Bublik's post-match interview showcased his unique personality. This distinctive player not only discussed the match but also shared profound thoughts on the current landscape of tennis and his career planning.

When asked about his relationships with tennis legends and the leading figures of the new generation, Bublik candidly stated that with the Big Threeit is more about admiration than personal friendship.

“I admire the Big Three, but we are not friends,” Bublik stated bluntly, “There is a sense of distance, of looking up and respect.” However, he then shifted the topic, mentioning that relationships with the two current top young stars are much easier. “It's easier to establish a relationship with Alcaraz and Sinner because when they first entered the tour, I had already been grinding on the tour for some time.”

For these two young talents, Bublik did not hold back praise and described them vividly. “They have injected fantastic elements into this sport. Alcaraz is a star, a very interesting and extremely noisy guy.” When mentioning “extremely noisy,” a smile of both helplessness and appreciation appeared on Bublik's face. “As for Sinner, he is more reserved on the court, at least on the court, but off the court he is very kind. It's really great to compete against them and occasionally challenge them.”

Besides evaluating his opponents, Bublik also deeply analyzed his mental journey after first entering the world's top ten. He admitted that after reaching the Top 10, a significant career milestone, he briefly felt lost.

“When I first entered the top ten, I was extremely happy because I realized I was in the top ten,” Bublik recalled, “But after that, I felt a kind of paralysis. I thought: What should I do now? Where is the next goal?”

This confusion is not unfamiliar to many athletes who first reach the top tier. Bublik indicated that he is trying to recalibrate his direction. “We need to readjust and see what achievements we can accomplish next.”

Looking ahead, Bublik sees opportunities. He specifically mentioned: “Until Roland Garros (French Open), I have almost no points to defend. Why not try to climb as high as possible? If it doesn't work out, it's fine, since I've already achieved my primary goal. But now, my focus is to win as many matches as possible.”

With this relaxed and pragmatic mindset, Bublik will continue his journey in Indian Wells. In the next round facing the dark horse Rinki Hijikata, the 10th seed with no points to defend is undoubtedly the more favored side.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Mei)
