Philippine young tennis player Alexandra Eala has, for the first time in her career, advanced to the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open after her American opponent Coco Gauff was forced to withdraw due to a left-hand injury during the match that took place on Sunday evening (local time) in California, USA.
Eala was leading 6-2, 2-0 when Gauff decided to stop the match after 54 minutes of play.
The match between Gauff and Eala was anticipated because both are close friends and have frequently partnered in doubles. Just a few weeks earlier, they had faced each other and Gauff secured a decisive victory. However, the scenario this time was entirely different.
Just when trailing 5-2 in the first set, the American player requested a medical timeout to examine her left hand. After returning to the court, Gauff was immediately broken, and Eala closed out the set with a 6-2 win.
During the break between sets, Gauff had thick bandaging wrapped around her left forearm. Nevertheless, after losing the first two games of the second set and falling behind 0-2, the American player was unable to continue.

Eala appeared emotional witnessing her opponent leave the court due to injury.
This is only the second time in her career that Gauff has had to withdraw mid-match. The previous instance occurred in 2022 at the Cincinnati Open when she faced Marie Bouzkova in the 64th round and suffered an ankle sprain.
Although securing the right to advance, Eala was visibly emotional seeing her opponent forced to leave due to injury. She even shed tears as Gauff exited the court. "I truly did not want to win in this manner, but this is still a very significant moment for me to compete at Indian Wells' Stadium One," Eala shared in the post-match interview. "I am very grateful to be here and genuinely happy."

Match statistics show that Eala had 9 winners, more than Gauff's 6. The American player committed 26 unforced errors, while Eala had only 12. Additionally, Gauff also had 7 double faults.
After defeating Gauff, Eala will face world-ranked No. 14 Linda Noskova in the fourth round. Noskova earned her spot to advance after defeating Sorana Cirstea with a score of 6(5)-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Advancing to the fourth round of Indian Wells marks an important milestone in Eala's career, a player regarded as the new pride of Philippine tennis.
