SHOCK: Southeast Asian star defeats world number 4 at Indian Wells 2026

A major surprise occurred at Indian Wells 2026 held in California, USA.

The number one tennis player from Southeast Asia - Alexandra Eala created a seismic upset at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament Indian Wells 2026 after overcoming the reigning world number 4, a two-time Grand Slam champion and one-time WTA Finals winner - Coco Gauff, in a match during the round of 16 on March 9th Vietnam time.

Before the match, Eala was completely underestimated compared to Gauff in terms of achievements and caliber. In their first encounter at the Dubai Tennis Championships late last February, Gauff literally "crushed" Eala with a 6-0; 6-2 victory. However, in this meeting, everything turned around.

Alexandra Eala created a major surprise at Indian Wells this year.

Without a strong serve, but with excellent return skills and a powerful forehand (left-handed), coupled with courageous play and the enthusiastic support of the crowd, Eala excelled, gaining a dominant position against her high-caliber opponent.

Eala lost her break early but quickly reclaimed what was lost, even preventing Gauff from winning any service games in the first set, securing a decisive 6-2 victory. In the second set, the Filipino player also broke Gauff's first service game before the world number 4 withdrew due to health issues.

This is only the second time in Coco Gauff's career that she has withdrawn mid-match. This means the ticket to the round of 8 at Indian Wells this year belongs to the Southeast Asian representative.

Eala's next opponent will be Linda Noskova, the Czech Republic's number 14 seed.

Eala, born in 2005, is one of the hottest names in the women's tennis world currently. Matches and videos featuring Eala and Zeynep Sonmez (Turkey) always attract massive fan interest, far surpassing even top-tier players like Aryna Sabalenka or Iga Swiatek.

In her career, Eala has won one WTA 125 title in Mexico, reached the final of a WTA 250 in Eastbourne (UK), and the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Miami Open (USA). The best ranking achieved by the Filipino player is position 31, attained this February; she currently ranks 32nd but faces the risk of losing many points due to defending a large point haul at upcoming Miami.
