Naomi Osaka's eye-catching leopard-print new outfit sparks fan debate, next round features key clash against Sabalenka.

After withdrawing from the third round of the Australian Open due to an abdominal injury, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka returned at Indian Wells. While her comeback was highly anticipated, what truly stole all the headlines was her match attire. So, why did this outfit attract such significant attention?

During the match, Naomi Osaka wore her usual Nike competition outfit, but the real discussion was sparked by custom jewelry accessories specially designed by Filipino-American designer Chris Habana. Before her first match, Osaka discussed her look in an interview with Vogue: "When I first saw my Nike match outfit, my team and I started thinking about a bigger question: how do we build a complete 'world' around it? I've always loved magazines and fashion spreads, so my first instinct naturally was to think about jewelry and accessories—elements that could extend this story."

Osaka's match attire included a top and shorts with an animal-print pattern, while Habana's accessories also included ear clips, a tooth accessory, mesh gloves, and a chainmail-style skirt. Her on-court look was not only unique but also highly eye-catching. Speaking about these accessories, Osaka said: "He has designed many layered pieces for artists, which look both expressive and well-designed. I love the idea of bringing that energy onto the court."

Not only did her appearance shine on the court, but the performance of this 16th seed was equally brilliant, as she defeated Kasintseva 7-5, 6-2 in straight sets to advance smoothly. Although this outfit was very striking during the match, the Japanese star revealed that her look would continue to evolve in upcoming matches: "These accessories will change with each match. Depending on how I feel that day, you'll see different combinations."

However, this is not the first time Naomi Osaka has made bold clothing choices on the court. On the third match day of this year's Australian Open, she wore a marine-toned tie-dye warm-up jacket with soft ruffles, paired with loose white wide-leg trousers. Over this, she layered a pleated mini skirt, creating a rich, layered look that appeared both playful and dramatic, completely unexpected. Finally, she topped it off with a wide-brim hat covered with a semi-transparent white veil and a matching small parasol to complete the ensemble.

As for the inspiration behind this look? She revealed that while reading to her two-year-old child, she saw pictures of jellyfish. The light, floating, almost magical feeling left a deep impression on her. Soon, when she stepped onto the court, the world saw her inspiration.

Back at Indian Wells, although Naomi Osaka's look sparked considerable discussion, many fans were not receptive. Instead, they voiced numerous criticisms of the outfit on social media.

Many fans did not like the idea of her wearing custom jewelry accessories during matches, and some even felt that the 28-year-old player seemed more focused on appearance than on the game itself. One fan wrote: "Less fashion, more wins. Please refocus on winning. If you get eliminated quickly, we don't care what you wear at all. @NaomiOsaka." Another fan commented: "She needs to focus on returning to the world top ten."

Despite facing considerable criticism, Naomi Osaka advanced to the round of 16 with a strong performance, and her next round presents a notable matchup—against world number one Aryna Sabalenka. The clash between Sabalenka and Osaka feels somewhat fresh because the two have hardly faced each other before. Surprisingly, they have only met once in their careers, eight years ago in the fourth round of the US Open, when the 20th seed Osaka defeated the 26th seed Sabalenka in three sets, both players being just 20 years old at the time.

"Hopefully I'll get a chance for revenge this time," Sabalenka told reporters. "I really want to play against her." Observers noted that Sabalenka even flashed a "hunter-like" glint in her eyes when saying this. Osaka stated: "Obviously, she is very consistent and is the world number one, which is very motivating for me. I'm looking forward to playing her and very excited for this matchup."
