Learner Tien is the future of American tennis.

That was the comment from former Wimbledon runner-up Greg Rudseski after Vietnamese-origin player Learner Tien defeated Ben Shelton 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters 2026.

Shelton seemed to lose confidence in turning the situation around quite early in this exciting match. Meanwhile, Tien handled the pressure from his compatriot's powerful serves to seal a 2-1 victory.

"I just want to say that Ben played while not being 100% physically. I think he hasn't been truly well all week, but Ben is a great opponent and gave his all. So I want to give him great respect," Tien shared. This win brings him closer to his goal of entering the ATP Top 20 for the first time, and marks his second victory over Shelton in their encounters.

This player born in 2005 reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in January, before continuing to appear in the semifinals of the ATP 250 Delray Beach Open last month. The rapid rise of Tien at age 20 has also received praise from major figures in tennis. Former British No. 1 Greg Rusedski is one of those who has given much acclaim to this young talent.

Learner Tien defeated compatriot Ben Shelton to reach the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters.

"The player who impressed me most is Learner Tien," Rusedski said on his podcast. "He has brought in a special figure, Michael Chang, former world No. 2, French Open champion and multiple Grand Slam finalist. He is one of the legends of tennis."

Tien has elevated himself to a higher level. And don't forget, past winners of the Next Gen ATP Finals like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jack Draper have all had very successful careers afterward. "I feel he will be a very notable name in 2026. I hear Chang is 'driving' him hard in training. Chang was also surprised that Tien has to train with such a heavy workload."

Taylor Fritz likely still holds the position of America's top tennis player, but with his current progress, Learner Tien could certainly aim for that spot at some point in 2026.
