Fearless French Nemesis! Fils Edges Out Aliassime in Thrilling Tiebreak, Powers into Masters Quarterfinals

Felix Auger-Aliassime is well-known to many tennis followers. In 2015, he achieved the milestone of being the youngest male player to secure his first Challenger main draw victory. Following that, Auger-Aliassime consistently pioneered achievements for players born after 2000. In 2018, he broke through as the first post-2000 player to enter a Grand Slam main draw; in 2019, he became the first post-2000 player to advance to a tour final. Subsequently, he also became the first post-2000 player to win a Grand Slam match in 2019, reach the Grand Slam fourth round in 2020, and make the Grand Slam semifinals in 2021. Because of these accomplishments, Auger-Aliassime is often regarded as the trailblazer or pioneer among the post-2000 generation.

However, many might not realize that over the past two years, Auger-Aliassime has also established himself as a formidable opponent for French players. In the 2025 season, he only lost once to French player Lindeknech in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals. That year, French players Cazaux, Aris, Muller, Perricard, and Bonzi all fell to him in matches, and even Lindeknech suffered two defeats against Auger-Aliassime during the 2025 season.

In 2026, Auger-Aliassime continued his dominance as the French players' nemesis. His sole tour-level title of the 2026 season was clinched on French soil in Montpellier. Moreover, he defeated French players Fils, Droguet, and Mannarino at that event, further cementing his reputation. Recently, at the Indian Wells Masters, he rallied to overcome French veteran Gael Monfils in the second round. Since 2025, Auger-Aliassime has triumphed over French opponents sixteen times, solidifying his status as the French players' scourge.

After rallying to beat compatriot Diallo, Auger-Aliassime faced French player Arthur Fils again in the Indian Wells Masters quarterfinals. Fils, a three-time tour champion with a Grand Slam fourth-round appearance, possesses considerable skill. Nevertheless, given Auger-Aliassime's recent straight-sets win over Fils in the Montpellier quarterfinals and his repeated successes against French opponents, both betting odds and fans heavily favored the "French Nemesis" to prevail.

However, right from the start of the first set, Fils broke Auger-Aliassime's serve to take the lead. Despite Auger-Aliassime's attempts to counterattack, Fils consistently neutralized them, sealing the set 6-3 to gain the advantage. In the second set, Fils led 4-2 initially, but a determined Auger-Aliassime fought back to level the score and force a tiebreak. During the tiebreak, Auger-Aliassime reached a set point. Just as many anticipated a deciding set, a dramatic turn occurred: Fils, pushed to the brink, surged back, saving five set points, equalizing the score, and then pulling ahead. Ultimately, he narrowly clinched the set 11-9, securing his first victory over Auger-Aliassime in the 2026 season.

With this win, Fils not only avenged his previous loss but also advanced to the Indian Wells Masters quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. Can he push further and achieve a new career breakthrough? We shall wait and see. That concludes today's tennis story; more updates tomorrow.Source: Tennis Home Author: Yixin居士
