Earlier this morning (Vietnam time), the 25th seed defeated Spanish opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) after a match lasting over two hours. This marks the first time in Tien's career that he has reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 tournament – a significant milestone for the 20-year-old player.

The match was tense as Davidovich Fokina won the first set after capitalizing on Tien's somewhat stiff start. However, the young American player quickly regained momentum in the second set by significantly improving his first-serve percentage and consecutively breaking his opponent's serve to level the score.

The drama escalated in the deciding set. When the score was 5-4, Davidovich Fokina had two match points and seemed poised for victory. However, Learner Tien displayed remarkable composure by saving both opportunities with bold attacking shots from the baseline.

Speaking after the match, Tien admitted that luck also played a part in his escape. On the first match point, he secured victory after a prolonged rally where he himself wasn't certain his decisive shot would land accurately. On the second opportunity, a good serve helped the Vietnamese-origin player escape the dangerous situation.

After narrowly avoiding defeat, Tien entered the tie-break with a completely relaxed mindset. He stated he felt like he had "nothing to lose" and played with extreme confidence. Stability in his baseline shots and his opponent's mistakes helped the 20-year-old player close out the match with a thrilling victory.

This achievement becomes even more meaningful as Tien is being coached by Michael Chang himself – the 1992 Indian Wells champion. According to Tien, the support of his famous mentor has greatly boosted his confidence in crucial moments. "I truly believe in myself much more because of him. We train very hard and prepare for moments like this," Tien shared.

Learner Tien's next challenge is Jannik Sinner, who defeated him in the 2025 China Open final

In the quarterfinals, Learner Tien will face a massive challenge named Jannik Sinner – the current world number two. The Italian star just secured victory over young Brazilian talent Joao Fonseca with a score of 7-6(6), 7-6(4) in a match considered one of the most exciting contests of this year's tournament. The match witnessed thrilling tie-breaks where Sinner displayed the composure of a championship contender.

In the first set, Sinner even had to save three set points during the tie-break before successfully turning the tide. In the second set, he continued to show his resilience by winning the second tie-break to conclude the match. This victory brings Sinner's total win count at Masters 1000 tournaments to 97, surpassing Fabio Fognini to become the Italian player with the most wins at this prestigious level.

While aiming for his first title at Indian Wells, Sinner is clearly rated higher in the matchup against Learner Tien. However, the impressive form and the "nothing to lose" spirit of the Vietnamese-origin player are leading many to anticipate a major upset.
