WTA Indian Wells: Gibson Upsets Paolini, Noskova Sweeps Ella

On March 11, Beijing time, the 2026 WTA/ATP Indian Wells tournament continued its quest for singles quarterfinal berths. The 21-year-old Talia Gibson continued her impressive run, defeating tournament No. 7 seed Paolini 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 to secure her first career victory over a Top 10 player. Making her debut in a WTA 1000-level event, she advanced to the quarterfinals, becoming the first qualifier to reach the quarterfinals at Indian Wells in 11 years (since Tsurenko in 2015).

Gibson

Prior to this match, Gibson had only secured two main draw wins on the WTA tour this year. At Indian Wells, after qualifying, she has now won three consecutive matches, including victories over two Top 20 players: she eliminated No. 11 seed Alexandrova in straight sets in the second round and overcame No. 17 seed Tauson in three sets in the third round, storming into the round of 16 as a dark horse to face former Grand Slam finalist Paolini.

In this match, Gibson played with resilience and aggression. In the first set, Paolini secured an early break and led 3-1, but the Australian remained composed, quickly earning a break back and securing another crucial break at the end of the set to win it 7-5. Gibson fired 18 winners in the first set alone, and by the end of the match, that astonishing number had reached 42. In her post-match interview, the 21-year-old Australian said, "Wow, I'm speechless. I'm proud of myself. I've really played exceptionally well these past two weeks."

Mboko

Noskova

No. 10 seed Mboko defeated No. 6 seed Anisimova 6-4, 6-1 and will face world No. 1 Sabalenka in the quarterfinals. Sabalenka also won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, eliminating former tournament champion Osaka. The final match on Court 1 featured Noskova and Filipino rising star Ella, with the Czech player sweeping her opponent 6-2, 6-0 to set up a semifinal spot clash with Gibson.

Tomorrow, the other half of the singles draws will continue their quarterfinal battles. Swiatek, Pegula, Alcaraz, and Djokovic will take to Court 1, while Rybakina, Medvedev, Norrie, and other top players will also vie for quarterfinal positions. In doubles, Chinese player Guo Hanyu partnering with Mladenovic will face the Italian pair Paolini/Erani, and Khachanov/Rublev will compete against the cousin duo Lindeknech/Vashero.
