Former world No. 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov: Mirra Andreeva is "stagnating"

Former world No. 1 tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov offered frank comments on Mirra Andreeva's performance, suggesting the young homegrown star is "stagnating" following her premature elimination at the 2026 Indian Wells Open.

Worrying signs for Mirra Andreeva

The 18-year-old entered the WTA 1000 tournament in California as the defending champion with high expectations. However, Andreeva's title defense ended early in the third round after an unexpected loss to world No. 44 Katerina Siniakova, with scores of 6-4, 6-7(5), 3-6. In this match, Andreeva was just two points away from victory but ultimately suffered a regrettable defeat.

According to Kafelnikov, the loss to Siniakova exposed issues in Andreeva's playing style. In an interview with Russia's Championat, the two-time Grand Slam champion did not hesitate to deliver a rather harsh assessment of his younger compatriot.

Kafelnikov believes Andreeva has shown no recent progress

"Who wouldn't question Mirra's form? Perhaps only those lacking tennis knowledge wouldn't doubt her current performance," Kafelnikov stated. "For them, Mirra's game has no problems, but for everyone else—including me—it does. She is not improving, and that is the most crucial point. She is stagnating."

In fact, this is not the first time the former Russian tennis player has made controversial statements about Andreeva. After the young player lost to Elina Svitolina in the fourth round of the 2026 Australian Open, Kafelnikov drew attention by claiming that with her current style, Andreeva "has no prospect of becoming world No. 1 or winning a Grand Slam." "Honestly, given how she is playing now, I will speak plainly. You may hate me or disagree with me, but she has no prospect of becoming world No. 1 or winning a Grand Slam," the 52-year-old former player said.

Nevertheless, Kafelnikov also affirmed that he genuinely hopes Andreeva improves her form and advances her career. According to him, the young player's talent is undeniable, but to reach the pinnacle of world tennis, she certainly needs to change and make more progress in her game.
