Carlos Alcaraz convincingly defeats Casper Ruud, achieving a historic milestone at Indian Wells

World number one Carlos Alcaraz continues to display impressive form in the 2026 season by defeating Casper Ruud to secure a spot in the Indian Wells Masters quarterfinals, simultaneously entering the tournament's history in the California desert.

After defeating Casper Ruud, Alcaraz advances to the Indian Wells Masters 2026 quarterfinals

In the fourth-round match held on March 12 morning, Alcaraz delivered a convincing performance to overcome Ruud with a score of 6-1, 7-6(2) after 91 minutes. The Spanish player started explosively with a nearly flawless first set, before maintaining composure in the second set as his Norwegian opponent improved his play.

After the match, Alcaraz admitted he was very satisfied with his performance. "Honestly, my first set was almost unbeatable. I'm very happy to reach that level of play. Hopefully in the next round I can maintain this form," the 22-year-old player shared.

Alcaraz also added that he always strives to balance focus and enjoyment while competing: "I can enjoy the match, but also quickly refocus. I try to play the best tennis on each point, but when there are shots worth smiling at, I do that too. Today Casper also had many great shots and I truly enjoyed that."

In the first set, Alcaraz quickly dominated the match thanks to powerful shots and tactical variations. From the third game, he excited the audience with two daring lobs before continuously moving Ruud across the court with heavy and precise groundstrokes. The constant pressure left the Norwegian player almost no chance to counter, helping Alcaraz win quickly 6-1.

The second set was more tense as Ruud clearly improved his play and forced Alcaraz into a tie-break. However, the world number one still demonstrated superior resilience by winning decisively 7-2 in the tie-break to conclude the match.

The victory over Ruud improves Alcaraz's head-to-head record against the Norwegian player to 6-1. More importantly, he becomes the first player in history to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals five times before age 23 – a notable milestone at this prestigious ATP Masters 1000 event.

Alcaraz currently holds a streak of 15 consecutive wins since the start of the season

Alcaraz's current form is also highly impressive. Since the beginning of the 2026 season, he has achieved a streak of 15 consecutive victories, including the Australian Open championship in January and the ATP 500 title in Doha.

Alcaraz's next opponent in the quarterfinals will be British player Cameron Norrie, the 2021 Indian Wells champion. He is also the player who most recently defeated Alcaraz (aside from Jannik Sinner) when they met at the Masters 1000 in Paris last October.

In the previous match, Norrie overcame Australian player Rinky Hijikata with a score of 6-4, 6-2 to secure his quarterfinal spot. The 30-year-old player is performing very well at Indian Wells, as this is his fourth time reaching the tournament's elite round of eight.

Therefore, the encounter between Alcaraz and Norrie promises to be a significant challenge for the world number one on his journey to conquer another title at Indian Wells.
