Djokovic stops at the fourth round of Indian Wells against the reigning champion

Novak Djokovic had to bid farewell early at the BNP Paribas Open after a dramatic defeat to reigning champion Jack Draper in the fourth round.

The match at Indian Wells Tennis Garden lasted three intense sets and concluded with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) score favoring the British player.

Even at 38 years old, Djokovic still demonstrated the caliber of a legend by starting the match quite well. The 24-time Grand Slam champion leveraged his experience to secure a 6-4 win in the first set through solid shot-making and control of the match tempo. However, Draper quickly responded in the second set by increasing power in his baseline shots and regained momentum to win 6-4, bringing the contest back to square one.

The deciding set was extremely tense with a series of prolonged rallies that drained both players physically. The highlight of the match came in the first game of the third set when Djokovic won a rally lasting 26 shots, prompting the spectators to stand up and applaud. However, the continuous grueling rallies also caused the Serbian player significant physical difficulties in the final stages of the match.

The drama peaked when Draper served to close out the match at 5-4 in the third set. Djokovic displayed champion's composure by winning three consecutive points to lead 0-40 and then successfully broke serve, pulling the match back to equilibrium. Nevertheless, the British player did not falter. He quickly regained his focus and forced his opponent into a decisive tie-break.

In this tie-break, Draper showed greater resolve by capitalizing well on opportunities to win 7-5, thus ending the match that lasted over two hours. This victory helps the 24-year-old player successfully continue his title defense journey at Indian Wells by advancing to the quarterfinals.

After the match, Draper could not hide his pride in defeating one of the greatest players in history. He stated that playing against Djokovic was a special experience, as he had watched and admired the Serbian player since childhood. Draper also admitted he is still not at his best form, but the victory came from determination and the ability to adjust tactics during difficult moments.

Notably, this is only Draper's second tournament since returning from a hand injury that sidelined him for several months.

With this win, Draper leveled his head-to-head record with Djokovic to 1-1. In the quarterfinals, he will face the next major challenge named Daniil Medvedev, a player who has twice reached the final of this tournament. Medvedev secured his spot after defeating home player Alex Michelsen with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Meanwhile, this defeat means Djokovic continues to miss his chance to return to the Indian Wells quarterfinals for the first time since 2016, despite having won the prestigious tournament five times.
