The British player will plummet on the world rankings due to failing to defend his Indian Wells championship.
Defending champion Jack Draper had to bid farewell to Indian Wells 2026 after a loss to Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinal match held on March 13th Vietnam time. The Russian player dominated the match to secure a convincing 6-1, 7-5 victory, thereby ending Draper's title defense journey at the Masters 1000 event held in California, USA.
Right from the first set, Medvedev displayed superior form by continuously applying pressure with powerful baseline shots. Draper appeared unsettled by his opponent's solid play and quickly lost 1-6 in less than 30 minutes of play.
In the second set, the British player competed more determinedly and managed to establish a balanced situation at times. However, Medvedev's consistency remained the differentiating factor. At the crucial moment late in the set, the former world number one capitalized well on a break opportunity to close out the match with a 7-5 win, officially eliminating the defending champion from the tournament.
This defeat prevents Draper from replicating his championship achievement at Indian Wells and also causes him to drop to world number 26 in the live ATP Rankings. Nevertheless, reaching the quarterfinals is still considered a noteworthy result given that he faced a high-performing opponent and is only recently back from a serious injury.
For Medvedev, the victory over Draper marks his fourth consecutive appearance in the Indian Wells semifinals. This achievement allows "Meddy" to join the rare group of players who have reached this milestone in the tournament's history, alongside names like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz.
Medvedev's recent form has also been very impressive. The 30-year-old player currently holds an 8-match winning streak after clinching the Dubai Tennis Championships title. More broadly, he has won 16 consecutive sets since his loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam.
In the semifinal, Medvedev will face either Alcaraz or Cameron Norrie. If he continues to advance and reaches the final, Medvedev is likely to return to the ATP top 10 for the first time since July 2025, thereby affirming his strong comeback.
