World No. 1 women's tennis player identifies future Grand Slam champion after reaching Indian Wells semifinals

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka continues to demonstrate remarkable consistency by securing a spot in the semifinals Indian Wells Open 2026 following a 7-6(0), 6-4 victory over Victoria Mboko.

In this match, Sabalenka successfully saved all five break points she faced, once again proving her ability to excel in decisive moments – a factor that often plays a crucial role in tense contests between top-ranked players.

The win over Mboko keeps Sabalenka's hopes alive for capturing her first title at Indian Wells, having twice missed the trophy by finishing runner-up in 2023 and 2025. Although the final score lasted only two sets, the match was actually quite balanced, especially in the opening set where Mboko produced several resilient rallies from the baseline, forcing the world's top player to maintain intense focus before the outcome was decided in the tie-break.

Speaking after the match, Sabalenka acknowledged it was a genuinely tough challenge and expressed satisfaction with how she handled the critical moments in each set. The four-time Grand Slam champion shared in the press conference: "It was truly a very difficult battle today. I'm very pleased with my performance. I'm also happy that I played well at the key moments in each set, and of course very glad to advance through such a difficult round."

Sabalenka stated that her ability to stay focused under pressure stems from maintaining a simple approach during play, rather than overthinking the importance of the match. According to the Belarusian player, concentrating solely on each point helps her avoid distraction by external factors.

"I don't really dwell much on the records or achievements I have," Sabalenka said. "I just try to play point by point, stick to the planned tactics, and maintain an aggressive style. Essentially, I just take it one step at a time."

The tie-break in the first set was the turning point of the quarterfinal. Sabalenka dominated completely with a 7-0 win, thanks to powerful return shots and formidable serving. This further demonstrates that the world No. 1 can elevate her game precisely during the most pressured moments.

When asked whether her past successes in tie-breaks give her greater confidence entering such situations, Sabalenka indicated she actively avoids feeling too comfortable, as complacency can quickly lead to mistakes.

"Not exactly," Sabalenka explained. "I feel that as soon I start relaxing too much, I will definitely start losing. So I think the reason I succeed in tie-breaks is because I always treat them very seriously."

She also emphasized that her approach does not change depending on the score. Sabalenka keeps playing proactively and aggressively rather than adjusting her mentality due to match circumstances. "I don't think about what happened before. I just try to focus on each point. I play aggressively; I don't think this is a tie-break. I just focus on my game, and I think that's the key."

This ability to handle crucial moments well is key to Sabalenka's impressive streak on tour. Since last summer, she has consistently reached the semifinals in six consecutive tournaments, showcasing rare stability in elite women's tennis.

Despite winning in two sets, Sabalenka acknowledged that Mboko has improved significantly compared to their previous encounter at the Australian Open earlier this season. In the Melbourne match, Sabalenka won relatively easily with a score of 6-1, 7-6(1).

According to Sabalenka, the young Canadian player has clearly improved both her serve and confidence, making the Indian Wells encounter much tighter and competitive. "There definitely was big improvement," Sabalenka noted. "I think today she served much better than in the match in Australia. She was also more confident and played more boldly."

The world No. 1 also praised Mboko's competitive spirit, suggesting those qualities could help the young player achieve major success in the future. "I see her playing very aggressively, with great emotion, and fighting hard on court without ever giving up. In my view, she definitely can become a Grand Slam champion in the future."

Sabalenka also mentioned a notable statistic at Indian Wells: the last seven women's champions of the tournament were all aged 23 or younger. At 26, the Belarusian player humorously remarked that this trend might not favor her, but she sees it as motivation to break this "curse."

"Maybe I don't have many chances," Sabalenka joked. "Perhaps because the playing conditions here are quite harsh, younger players are physically stronger and handle the heat better than us – the 'older' ones. But I'll take that as motivation to break that statistic."

Beyond tactical and physical factors, Sabalenka believes balance in life off the court is key to maintaining her form throughout the long and grueling professional tennis season. When asked what her "superpower" is at this point in her career, Sabalenka replied with her familiar humorous style: "I don't have any superpower. Maybe that is my superpower."

The Belarusian player further explained that finding balance between tennis and personal life helps her keep a fresh mental state throughout the packed tournament schedule. "I think my 'superpower' is the ability to balance life on and off the court. That is really important, and I think I do that quite well."

In the semifinals, Sabalenka will face No. 14 seed Linda Noskova, after the Czech player defeated Talia Gibson 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Sabalenka aims to take another step at Indian Wells – where she has twice missed the championship title.
