Sabalenka seeks revenge against Rybakina: Fed up with losing major finals

The world's top-ranked player moved closer to the title at the Indian Wells Open, as Sabalenka overpowered Noskova 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. Played on Court 1 of the BNP Paribas Open, Sabalenka sealed the victory in 1 hour and 28 minutes. She now prepares for an intense final clash against Rybakina, aiming to fulfill a much-anticipated "revenge" in the desert of California.

During the post-match press conference, Sabalenka was questioned about her performances in major finals. The Belarusian star admitted that this time she hopes to alter the outcome. "I will make sure I prepare more thoroughly, bring my best tennis to the court, and ensure I can accomplish it this year," Sabalenka stated.

She also explained that the losses in recent finals left her feeling deeply frustrated. The world number one believes she missed many crucial opportunities in those matches. "I just want to focus, I want to make sure I can do it, I can claim the trophy. I've grown tired of losing these big finals. Even though my opponent played incredible tennis at the time, I felt I had plenty of chances but didn't capitalize on them."

Sabalenka indicated that her mindset is now entirely focused on winning. She plans to give everything in the upcoming match, with the trophy as the ultimate goal. "My current mentality is to step onto the court and do whatever it takes to win that trophy."

Later, she was asked how she maintains focus when facing Rybakina. Sabalenka explained that major matches are often decided by details. "I think concentrating on my own game plan, on the small details within each point, helps you stay relaxed yet ready at all times. I believe that's the best approach for such matches."

In the other semifinal, Rybakina secured her spot in the final by defeating Svitolina 7-5, 6-4. The Kazakh star once again displayed her calm composure during critical moments.

However, Sabalenka's previous performances in Indian Wells finals have not been ideal; she holds a 0-2 record in championship matches at this event, giving her extra motivation this time.

Among their encounters at Indian Wells, the most memorable one occurred in 2023, when Rybakina defeated Sabalenka in straight sets to win the title. After trailing by a break in the first set, she rallied to win 7-6 (13-11), 6-4. That victory was Rybakina's first win in their initial five meetings and also marked the first time their match did not require three sets.

With the semifinal win, Sabalenka improved her 2026 season record to 12-1, marking her sixth consecutive semifinal appearance in WTA tournaments. Her most recent loss before reaching the semifinals was against Rybakina in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open last August. Now, as they meet again in the final, everyone knows the battle in the California desert is destined to be exceptionally intense.

The rivalry between Sabalenka and Rybakina has become one of the most evenly matched contests in women's tennis. Both players rely on aggressive baseline power and fearless shot-making, with their matches often hinging on a few pivotal moments.

Sabalenka has previously stated that she is well aware of the challenges Rybakina presents. The Belarusian star knows her opponent's danger in big matches. Nevertheless, Rybakina believes the match will ultimately depend on details. When asked about their 2023 clash at the same event, Rybakina recalled it as a very tough battle. "Every match against Aryna is difficult, and in that match my serve was performing well."

Rybakina also reminisced about the intensity of that desert duel but emphasized that their numerous encounters over the years have evolved this rivalry. "I remember that match, but we've played many times since. I think the key lies in those critical moments—usually whoever takes initiative first, plays more aggressively and consistently, has a better chance to win." The Kazakh player anticipates the final will still be a grueling contest. Both players recognize their strengths are very close. "So, it will definitely be a very difficult match."

This final also offers Sabalenka a chance for revenge. Earlier this year, she lost to Rybakina in the Australian Open final. She had a lead in the deciding set but ultimately couldn't maintain her advantage.

Their clashes have historically been tight. They have met 15 times in singles, with Sabalenka holding a slight edge in the overall head-to-head record at 8-7. However, on the championship stage in finals, Rybakina clearly dominates—she leads 4-1. Sabalenka's sole final victory came at the 2023 Australian Open.

Since then, Rybakina has defeated her opponent in four consecutive finals: at Indian Wells 2023, Brisbane 2024, the WTA Finals 2025, and the Australian Open 2026. Now both arrive at this final in excellent form. Who do you think will claim the BNP Paribas Open championship this time—Sabalenka or Rybakina? (Source: Tennis Home, Author: Spark)
