Alcaraz suffers a shocking loss at Miami Open; how does the 'two-horse race' with Sinner change?

Carlos Alcaraz's very early exit from Miami Open 2026 could lead to significant future repercussions, particularly concerning the world No. 1 ranking of the Spanish tennis player.

At 22 years old, Alcaraz concluded the "Sunshine Double" tournaments of Indian Wells and Miami with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses, after falling to Sebastian Korda in the third-round match on March 22.

The defeat in Florida inadvertently opened an opportunity for his direct rival and also the world No. 2, Jannik Sinner, to narrow the gap in the race for the top spot on the PIF ATP rankings.

Sinner and Alcaraz are currently dominating the world of men's tennis.

Currently, Alcaraz still maintains a 2,140-point lead over Sinner on the ATP Live rankings. However, the Italian player continues his journey in Miami and could potentially reduce the gap to just 1,240 points if he wins his third consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title.

In fact, Sinner could have even come closer to the top spot if Alcaraz only had to defend a mere 10 points at Miami this year, after being eliminated by David Goffin in the second round last season. In the next round, the No. 2 seed Sinner will face world No. 30 Corentin Moutet for a spot in the fourth round.

The impact of Alcaraz's early elimination becomes even more notable considering the substantial points he must defend in the coming months. During the upcoming European clay-court season, the Spanish player will have to defend up to 4,300 points, having previously won the Monte Carlo Masters, Rome Masters, and Roland Garros, and also reaching the final of the Barcelona Open last season. Conversely, Sinner only needs to defend 1,850 points and even has no points to defend until the tournament in Rome in May.

Nevertheless, despite Alcaraz's world No. 1 ranking facing significant pressure from Sinner in the medium term, the Spanish player will still manage to establish an advantage in total weeks at the top. It is expected that by early April, Alcaraz will match the milestone of 66 weeks as world No. 1 with Sinner himself, regardless of whether the Italian player wins the Miami title.
