Nadal personally recommends, will Swiatek try out Raducanu's former coach?

After 17 months of collaboration, Swiatek decided to part ways with coach Wim Fissette earlier this week. The 24-year-old Polish player won three singles titles under Fissette's guidance, including the 2025 Wimbledon women's singles championship. Therefore, finding a suitable successor is not easy. However, there is currently a clear candidate ready to take on this challenge.

According to reports from the Polish sports newspaper "Sport," Swiatek will go to the Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca to train with Francisco Roig. Since Fissette's departure, this Spanish coach has been linked with the world's third-ranked Swiatek, and now he appears to be a strong contender for the position.

The report also reveals that Nadal himself has recommended Swiatek to hire Roig as her next coach. As a 22-time Grand Slam champion, Nadal is an idol Swiatek has admired since childhood, so she will likely seriously consider this suggestion. Additionally, Roig worked on Nadal's coaching team from 2005 to 2022, and the two have a deep bond and achieved glorious successes together, making him once again a top candidate for the role.

The report also notes that after losing to Svitolina in the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells Open with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 4-6, Swiatek and her team began looking for a replacement for Fissette. Swiatek officially announced her split with Fissette after losing to her compatriot Linette in the first round of the Miami Open with a score of 6-1, 5-7, 3-6.

Regarding Roig, despite his rich coaching experience, his recent coaching results have not been outstanding. After leaving Nadal's team, he replaced Vincenzo Santopadre in December 2023 as Berrettini's coach. Although the Italian player won three singles titles under his guidance, the two still parted ways in October 2024.

After this brief collaboration ended, Roig was hired as Raducanu's coach in August 2025. At that time, the British player was in a slump, and expectations were high for Roig to completely reverse her decline. However, no turnaround occurred, and her exit in the second round of the Australian Open earlier this year became the final straw—the 2021 US Open champion parted ways with the Spanish coach in less than half a year.

If Roig ultimately becomes Swiatek's coach, he will face immediate pressure to deliver results, as the clay season is approaching. Her dominant performances on clay over the past few years have made Swiatek one of the most competitive players on this surface, having won 10 clay singles titles, including 4 French Open championships. She hopes to win multiple titles during the long and arduous clay season with the support of a new coach.

Swiatek has not yet officially announced her new coach, and several other candidates have been linked to the position, including the current coach of the highest-ranked Filipino female player.

It is reported that Joan Bosch, the coach of world No. 29 Eala, is also among the candidates considered by Swiatek's team to replace Fissette. Bosch has close ties with the Nadal Tennis Academy and began coaching Eala in early 2025.

According to the Polish media "Sport Review," Bosch is eager to become Swiatek's coach and has even inquired with the academy about the opportunity to train with the Polish player. He told "Sport Review": "I have asked the academy if I could have a training session with Swiatek when she arrives in Mallorca."

Although Bosch is interested in joining Swiatek's team, he also admits that a Spanish coach might be more suitable for Swiatek, helping her regain her original playing style. "In my opinion, a Spanish coach would be a good choice for Swiatek. I agree with her recent statements that her goal should be to return to her own style of play: baseline-oriented, solid defense, because that is Iga's signature style."

Additionally, Bosch praises Swiatek's talent highly, believing that working with the world No. 3 would be an "incredible" experience. "This is a huge challenge. Ideally, I would continue working with Eala, as we have been together from the start, and I value long-term collaborations. But I also greatly admire Iga's tennis, her talent, and her professionalism. She is a player a coach can team up with to chase Grand Slams. Yes, if I could work with her someday, it would be absolutely wonderful."

After a slump in the Sunshine Double, with the WTA European season set to begin next month, Swiatek is eager to regain her form. Her next tournament is expected to be the Stuttgart Open, a WTA500 clay-court event starting on April 13.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Spark)
