Tien stands out as one of the premier young talents globally, receiving broad recognition from figures such as Djokovic and Medvedev.
The young American tennis player Learner Tien marked a memorable career milestone by advancing to his first quarterfinal in an ATP Tour clay court event, following a victory over Nishesh Basavareddy at the 2026 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston, USA.
In the match held early morning on April 3 (Vietnam time), the 20-year-old defeated his compatriot with scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. This victory was significant not only in terms of outcome but also psychologically, as Tien previously had a record of only 1 win and 6 losses on clay courts on the Tour.
According to ATP statistics, Tien created up to 15 break opportunities and successfully converted 3, raising his head-to-head record against Basavareddy to 3-0. Despite losing momentum in the second set, the 2005-born player quickly regained control in the decisive set.
"I think my energy dipped a bit in the second set, and he played much better. But in the third set, I tried not to lose my first service game and maintained focus.", Tien shared after the match.
In the quarterfinals, this young star with family ties to Vietnam will face Roman Andres Burruchaga, who recently defeated Vietnamese-origin player Brandon Nakashima after three intense sets.
The U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship is a uniquely premier clay court event on the Tour. This tournament does not use standard clay but employs Har-Tru courts—made from crushed metabasalt (green stone). Har-Tru surfaces drain quickly, dry faster than regular clay, and offer ball speed comparable to some ATP hard court events.
Performing well on Har-Tru does not guarantee success on European clay courts. This explains why most top American players currently often do not achieve strong results at tournaments like Madrid, Rome, or Roland Garros.
