World number one Carlos Alcaraz might confront the retiring veteran Stan Wawrinka in his very first match at the Monte Carlo Masters, whereas the second seed Jannik Sinner has landed in a difficult bracket.
Defending champion Alcaraz – who recently disappointed with a shocking third-round exit at the Miami Open – receives a first-round bye and will meet the winner of the match between Wawrinka and Sebastian Baez. Notably, Alcaraz has never faced Wawrinka at the elite level, while he leads Baez 3-0 in their previous encounters.
Although their current rankings are not high, with Wawrinka at world number 94 and Baez ranked 50, both are extremely dangerous players on clay courts. Each has won seven titles on this surface. Wawrinka, a former world number three, clinched the Monte Carlo Masters in 2014 and Roland Garros in 2015, while Baez holds six ATP titles earned on clay.

Alcaraz and Sinner remain the two players rated highest at the Monte Carlo Masters 2026
If the seeds advance as expected, Alcaraz will encounter fourteenth seed Frances Tiafoe in the third round, before potentially meeting eighth seed Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals. However, Bublik is likely to have to overcome eleventh seed Jiri Lehecka in the third round.
Alcaraz defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the final last year (2025), but a rematch in the 2026 final is not possible as the two players are projected to meet from the semifinals. Musetti, the fourth seed, will begin his campaign against Valentin Vacherot or Kamil Majchrzak, before possibly facing fifth seed Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals. De Minaur will start by competing against Cameron Norrie or Miomir Kecmanovic.
Meanwhile, world number two Sinner has a chance to seize the ATP top spot from Alcaraz if he achieves a better result at the tournament, but his path is assessed as extremely arduous.
The four-time Grand Slam champion will face Ugo Humbert or the young French talent Moise Kouame in the second round, before potentially meeting three-time Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas or Francisco Cerundolo in the third round.
Sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime – who will meet Marin Cilic or a qualifier – could be Sinner's opponent in the quarterfinals. However, the Canadian player is likely to have to overcome ninth seed Casper Ruud already in the third round.
In the third section of the draw, third seed Alexander Zverev faces a massive challenge as he lands in a "death group" alongside seventh seed Daniil Medvedev and thirteenth seed Andrey Rublev. Zverev will start by facing Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or a qualifier, before potentially confronting Rublev – the Monte Carlo 2023 champion – in the third round. If he navigates these challenges, he is likely to meet Medvedev in the quarterfinals.
In their head-to-head history, Medvedev leads Zverev 14-8 and has won 13 of their last 16 meetings, although the German player secured victory in their most recent encounter at the Paris Masters 2025.
The player who survives this brutal section is likely to face Sinner in the semifinals for a spot in the final, before heading towards a potential showdown with Alcaraz in the championship match on Sunday.
