Recently, former world No. 3 and 2009 US Open champion Del Potro spoke highly of Novak Djokovic in an interview with Olympics.com.
Del Potro said Djokovic would be "the best" as long as he continued to compete, and said he believed Novak could win more Grand Slam titles. Djokovic currently holds the all-time record for a men's Grand Slam singles title, claiming his 24th Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open.
During Djokovic's illustrious career, he won 10 titles at the Australian Open, seven at Wimbledon, four at the US Open and three at the French Open. Although he lost to Alcaraz in the 2024 Wimbledon final to finish as runner-up and reached the semi-finals of the last two Australian Opens, that did not detract from his greatness. This year's French Open, which takes place from May 25 to June 8, will be the next stop on his Grand Slam journey. Djokovic, who will turn 38 on May 22, also won his 99th title at the Paris Olympics in August 2024.
When asked if the generation of young players such as Fonseca, Mensik and Lerchan has the potential to be the best players after the 'Big Three', Del Potro said that this generation may be good, but it is too early to say whether they can be as good as Jansinna and Alcaraz. He believes that talent alone is not enough, but also requires hard work, self-discipline and health. And as long as Djokovic is on the field, he's the best.
Del Potro is convinced that winning a Grand Slam is a very personal achievement for Djokovic, and with his experience, if he is in good physical condition, he will be able to continue to try and possibly succeed. He also mentioned that it would be a great thing for the tennis world if Djokovic won the gold medal again after a while, as he did at the Paris Olympics.
In addition, Del Potro revealed that he has a tennis academy in Pointton Beach, Florida, and teaching kids to play with various people excites him. Although he said that he was tired of running all over the world as a full-time coach, he would happily agree if Djokovic invited him, and the coaching door was not completely closed. Does this make fans look forward to it? Maybe this year's US Open will really see Del Potro appear as coach Djokovic?
Del Potro officially retired last December after his touching farewell exhibition match with Djokovic in Buenos Aires. His high recognition of Djokovic is not only an affirmation of his old friend, but also reflects Djokovic's preeminent position in tennis.
