Fognini announces "last dance" in Rome

Fabio Fognini has announced that this year will be his last appearance at the Rome Masters. In an interview with the tennis channel, he said:

"I've been here since I was a kid and I thought 'oh, look at it, hopefully one day I'll be able to play here'. And now, my career has gone in the opposite direction. I think it's time to say goodbye to this beautiful and special city. But yes, I'm going to come here with a smile on my face, because I know I've had a really tough time in Rome for 15 years, or 16 years, 20 years, and I want to enjoy this last dance. ”

Fognini's record at Roma is 16-17. The soon-to-be 38-year-old made his debut on clay in 2006 and had his best result in 2018, reaching the quarter-finals.

The former ATP No. 9 athlete reflected on his accomplishments in the Italian capital ahead of his final appearance this week.

Fognini said: "There was one match that was definitely special, and that was a night win over Andy Murray, who was ranked number one in the world at the time. ”

In 2017, Fognini defeated Murray 6-2, 6-4 in Rome.

"This game has a special place in my heart, especially in Rome. I feel like this is one of the most important wins of my career. ”

He said:

I live for moments like this. That's how my personality is. I play with passion, sometimes too passionately. But I think when I played my best in Rome, the crowd was happy to see me beat Andy. I've beaten Gale [Monfils], I've beaten Tsonga, I've beaten a lot of good guys. Of course, my dream since I was a kid was to win here. But honestly, now and in the future, I've had the opportunity to tell Federico (his son) and my two daughters that I've played against Roger, Rafa, Andy, Novak and that this part of my career is really special.

Fognini is one of the most unusual beings in tennis. He was born on May 24, 1987, just two days younger than Djokovic. On the court, he showed his laid-back, dashing and clever personality to the fullest. He has won nine Tour titles, including the Monte Carlo Masters in 2019.

Fognini, who enters as a wildcard, will face Jacob Fearnley in the first round on Thursday as he struggles for his first tour win since last October. If he advances, he will face compatriot Matteo Berrettini in the second round.

[Come and see me] [Flicking fists] [Zuoyi] [Laughs]
