The 2025 Hamburg Open has caused waves due to the imminent retirement of a number of big-name players, with the retirement of world No. 1 Sinner being the most eye-catching.
The ATP 500 tournament will kick off on May 18 and will feature nine current ATP top 20 players on the original roster, including three top 10 stars. However, the new schedule of the tournament to the week before the French Open has taken a toll on the roster – the Hamburg Open was previously held after Wimbledon (in July).
In addition to Sinner, Musetti and Rune, who are currently ranked 9th and 10th, have also withdrawn. Among the top 20 stars, Paul and Tsitsipas also retired from the tournament, while 22nd-ranked Korda and 23rd-ranked Amber also opted not to participate. Sinner, Musetti and Paulo all withdrew after reaching the semi-finals of the Italian Open. Mensik also opted to retire at the last minute.
Despite the knockouts, the tournament was on the heel: world No. 2 and German tennis leader Zverev accepted an A+ wildcard (usually reserved for high-ranked players on an interim basis) to Hamburg. The 28-year-old Zverev won the title in 2023 and finished runner-up last year after losing to Arthur Firth. He had no plans to participate in the tournament but accepted a wild card offer after losing to Musetti in the quarter-finals in Rome to change his decision.
Zverev will be the only top 10 player in the draw, along with the other three top 20 players being Fertiaf, Rublev and Serundolo. The No. 5-8 seeds are Davidovich Fokina, Aliassime, Brandon Nakashima and Baez.
Other players competing at the Hamburg Open are:
Bublik, Lehecka, Echeverry, Monfils, Agutte, and China's Buyun Chaokert.
