Recently, Federer visited Spain with his wife Mirka, returning to Mallorca to reunite with his old rival and friend Nadal. They both attended a heartfelt ceremony honoring the 14-time French Open champion at Roland Garros just over a month ago.
In a video that surfaced on social media, the two former world number ones were spotted walking together on a court at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy.
In another video, the legendary players, who each hold 20 and 22 Grand Slam titles respectively, were captured conversing with Federer's wife Mirka.
It remains unclear what the exact purpose of this visit from the tennis legends to Mallorca is; whether the Federers' trip is merely a private visit or if it indicates a potential collaboration between the Swiss and the Spaniard is yet to be revealed by time.
The last time the two publicly met was on the first day of the 2025 French Open, when Nadal received a special tribute for his remarkable achievements in this clay court Grand Slam and his profound impact on tennis and beyond.
During this year's tribute ceremony at Roland Garros, Nadal's three main rivals and friends—Federer, Djokovic, and Murray—gathered to witness this historic moment together. After the ceremony, Federer reflected fondly on their reunion during an interview.
“I think it’s very important to have a farewell ceremony for a player of Nadal’s caliber. He is a giant in this sport. If we can be present with Novak and Andy to add some meaning to this moment, I think that’s a beautiful thing. For me, having my closest players by my side during retirement is incredibly significant. I believe for Nadal, this sense of 'closure' is also very important,” said the legendary player, who has 103 singles titles, in an interview on the ATP website.
“Fedal” was once one of the most legendary rivalries in tennis, with the two facing off 40 times, where Nadal holds a 24-16 advantage. Notably, the 2008 Wimbledon final is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis matches in history.
Nadal did not appear at Wimbledon this year, despite expectations that he might share the stage with Federer again; surprisingly, the Spaniard expressed no regret over missing the trip to London.
Unlike Federer, Nadal stayed at home in Mallorca during Wimbledon, spending time with his wife Maria Francisca Perello, who is now pregnant with their second child, due within a month. Their first son was born in October 2022 and also appeared at several of Nadal's “farewell matches” last year, including the Paris Olympics and the Davis Cup.
In an interview with The Times during Wimbledon, Nadal explained why he did not attend the tournament in person like Federer. He stated that while he hopes to return to watch Wimbledon in the future, he is currently in a “different stage” of his life.
He emphasized that he does not regret being absent from the London event, stating that unlike the Federer couple, who were seen in the Royal Box watching Djokovic's quarterfinal match, he chose to follow the tournament in a different manner. “Honestly, I have no regrets; my life has changed, and I’m enjoying the event from a different perspective. I hope to return to Wimbledon in the future, but right now, I’m in another stage of my life.”
During the interview, Nadal also discussed his life post-retirement and revealed that he is recovering very well physically. “This is my first complete summer in Mallorca. The first month after retirement, I felt terrible and could barely walk. But now, my recovery is better than I expected.”
Nadal's last appearance at Wimbledon as a player was in 2022, when he reached the semifinals against Kyrgios but was forced to retire due to an abdominal injury, missing the chance to advance further.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Huohua)
