Magdalena Stysiak, a key player for Poland’s women’s volleyball team, praised the Vietnam team’s performance.
Poland’s women’s volleyball team (ranked 3rd globally) was surprisingly defeated by the 22nd-ranked Vietnam team in the first set during the 2025 World Championship group stage on the evening of August 23. However, Poland quickly bounced back to win 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-22), securing all three points in their Group G opening match.
Poland’s star player Magdalena Stysiak delivered an outstanding performance, scoring an impressive 29 points, including 23 attacks and 6 blocks. Middle blocker Agnieszka Korneluk and outside hitter Martyna Łukasic also made significant contributions to the comeback, each adding 16 points.

"The opening match in a tournament like this is always very tough," Stysiak shared. "We have great respect for Vietnam; they played well, but honestly, we performed poorly in the first set. After that, we returned to our style of play and will learn lessons from the first set for the important matches ahead," Magdalena Stysiak stated.
Magdalena Stysiak (born December 3, 2000) is a 2.03 m opposite hitter for the Polish women’s volleyball team and the Turkish club Fenerbahçe. She made her debut in the Polish national league in 2016 with SMS PZPS Szczyrk. In 2018, Stysiak won a bronze medal at the U19 European Championship and was named Best Opposite. At the club level, she has played for Chemik Police, Grot Budowlani Łódź, Savino del Bene Scandicci, Vero Volley Milano before joining Fenerbahçe in 2023, where she won the Turkish league title, Cup, Super Cup, and a bronze medal in the 2023–24 CEV Champions League.
Wearing the Polish national jersey, Stysiak has participated in many major tournaments such as EuroVolley 2019, Nations League 2019, World Championship 2022, and has consecutively won three Nations League bronze medals (2023, 2024, 2025).
Meanwhile, Trần Thị Thanh Thúy expressed satisfaction with her team’s performance. "We are happy to have played well against one of the strongest teams in the world," said captain Trần Thị Thanh Thúy. "We have strong team unity and really enjoyed the match. We came to the World Championship to learn by facing stronger teams and to gain more experience at this level," Thanh Thúy emphasized.
Also in Group G, Germany defeated African champions Kenya 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-20) in Phuket. Lina Alsmeier and Emilia Weske were Germany’s top scorers, each with 13 points.
After the match against Poland, the Vietnam women’s volleyball team will face Germany on August 25 and then Kenya on August 27.
