Thanh Thúy repeated the same action during the match against Poland’s national team, but no one understood why.
Trần Thị Thanh Thúy has extensive international experience and is known as a very "smart" player. She usually adapts her play flexibly to the situation to score points.
It could be a simple powerful spike, a technical block-hit, a sharp cross-court hit, or a soft drop shot when spotting gaps on the opponent’s side.
However, for some unknown reason, in the match against Poland, Thanh Thúy only used one method: spiking. Whether from behind the 3-meter line or at the net, whenever she received the ball from teammates, she would eagerly jump and spike despite knowing that on the other side were blockers with more experience, better jumping ability, and much taller than her.
Thanh Thúy needs to attack more wisely and reasonably when facing tall, experienced blockers.
Since recovering from her knee injury, Thanh Thúy’s jump power has noticeably declined, and her spikes are no longer as strong as before. Yet against at least two tall blockers from Poland, she kept spiking repeatedly.
The outcome is known to all. Thanh Thúy scored only 6 points throughout the match, including 5 attack points and 1 block point. Out of 25 attacks, 24 were spikes.
Among those 24 spikes, only 8 went over or touched the blockers and landed on Poland’s side without scoring. In 12 other attempts, she made errors that allowed Poland to score directly. These 12 spike errors included hitting the ball into the net, out of bounds, or blocked back onto her own side—most often blocked by Poland, with nearly 10 rebounds back to her court.
Poland’s blocking line is world-renowned. They have literally giant blockers like outside hitter Stysiak (2.03m) and middle blocker Korneluk. But Thanh Thúy seemed oblivious, spiking straight at the ready hands of her opponents whenever she got the ball.
Why didn’t “4T” try drop shots, or find ways to bypass or sneak around the blockers like Như Quỳnh did multiple times against Poland despite being only 1.75m tall?
In one of the best matches of her national team career, against France at the 2023 FIVB Challenger Cup, Thanh Thúy scored 21 points including many drop shots, sharp cross-court hits, or hitting through gaps to score.
Two years later, she attacked exactly like a star who hasn’t scored much for a long time and wanted to relieve pressure by spiking. In the end, the pressure was not relieved but rather intensified on Thanh Thúy, even more than before.
It’s unclear whether psychological frustration or other reasons caused “4T” to lose composure against Poland, but clearly, she cannot continue attacking like this against tall, experienced blockers. Otherwise, she will keep causing huge disappointments on the offensive front.
