The reason why the main attacker scored 29 points against Vietnam but received an average rating from European media, Poland’s coach rated 3/10

Despite beating Vietnam 3-1 in their opening match of Group G at the 2025 Women’s Volleyball World Championship, the coach and several Polish stars were given very low ratings by the country’s sports media.

Outside hitter Magdalena Stysiak (score 5/10)

A well-known saying in volleyball: "There are three kinds of lies in the world: lies, damn lies, and statistics," seems particularly true in this case.

Magdalena Stysiak scored 29 points against Vietnam but was only rated 5/10 by Polish media

Post-match statistics cannot fully capture the moments a player scores. For Stysiak, her performance at the end of the first set, combined with the number of times she was blocked and defended successfully by Vietnam, was a clear negative. Although her efforts to regain form afterward deserve recognition, the points scored do not always tell the full story.

Middle blocker Agnieszka Korneluk (8/10)

As captain, this middle blocker demonstrated leadership in guiding her teammates back into the game. She scored points through essential blocks and effective counterattacks. A minor flaw was her slightly slow reaction to Vietnam’s short serves at the end of the first set. However, scoring 15 points as a middle blocker is a major plus.

Outside hitter Martyna Łukasik (8/10)

A "silent hero" who needed time to get into the rhythm of the match. After the first set, she quickly adapted to the opponent’s blocking, secured important points, carried the pressure at the set’s end, and added strong serves.

Outside hitter Martyna Czyrnianska (8/10)

Poland’s opening match performance can be summarized by the word "explosive". She clearly prepared thoroughly throughout the club season to join the national team in top form. Throughout the international season, her serves have been consistently "threatening." In the first set alone, her attack success rate exceeded 70%. Unfortunately, setter Katarzyna Wenerska did not provide her with many attacking chances.

Setter Katarzyna Wenerska (7/10)

Some of her passing choices were surprising, but she managed well after the first set loss by directing more balls to the left side. Wenerska also made an impact with a scoring block – a rare achievement for a setter.

Middle blocker Magdalena Jurczyk (3/10)

A quick middle blocker is always an advantage against Asian teams, but it is puzzling that Jurczyk lacked synergy with Wenerska, even though they are familiar from club play. Her presence on the court was almost invisible.

Coach Stefano Lavarini (3/10)

Fans are accustomed to the hardworking spirit of the Italian coach, but this time he disappointed by not utilizing substitutions effectively. When the team faced difficulties, he only brought Justyna Łysiak onto the court quite late. Marlena Kowalewska, a setter returning after a long absence, also deserved more playing opportunities.
