The encounter between Vietnam's women's volleyball team and Germany is expected to be exciting, with Coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt's players demonstrating great resolve and significant improvement.
Vietnam's women's volleyball team enters the second round of Group G at the 2025 World Championship with high confidence following an encouraging performance against Poland. Although they lost 1-3 in their opening match, winning the first set against the world’s third-ranked team marked a historic milestone, boosting the motivation for Coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt’s players to aim for an upset against Germany at 5 PM on August 25 in Phuket, Thailand.
The opening match against Poland saw a brilliant performance from Vi Thị Như Quỳnh. The 2002-born attacker was unexpectedly assigned as the main scorer instead of captain Trần Thị Thanh Thúy. Coach Tuấn Kiệt’s decision quickly paid off as Như Quỳnh played explosively, repeatedly breaking through the opponent’s tall block and finishing the match with 20 points. Her outstanding form not only secured a historic set win but also boosted the entire team's confidence in their competitiveness.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’s next opponent, Germany, currently ranked 11th in the world, defeated Kenya 3-0 in their opening match. However, this victory was not without challenges. Coach Giulio Bregoli admitted his team had yet to reach their best form and were still adjusting to the tournament pace. The Italian coach noted that all participating teams, including Vietnam, have made noticeable progress, significantly closing the gap with the top contenders.
Before the match, experts believe Vietnam can pose significant challenges to Germany. It’s worth remembering that in a friendly before the tournament, Thanh Thúy and her teammates defeated Kenya 4-0, indicating that the Southeast Asian team can compete evenly with teams in their group. Nevertheless, Germany’s advantages in height, physical strength, international experience, and composure still make them the strong favorites.
Coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt and his staff have stated that the team will approach the match with a relaxed mindset and have prepared suitable personnel and tactical plans. The goal is not only to play competitively but also to aim for winning at least one set against the European opponent. This approach will help Vietnam’s women accumulate points and experience while proving that their set win against Poland was not a mere fluke.
