The surprising truth about two Vietnamese female volleyball stars competing in the 2025 World Championship
Both are members of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team competing in the 2025 World Championship, yet Trần Thị Thanh Thúy and Như Quỳnh are on two very different paths.
The contrasting paths of Thanh Thúy and Như Quỳnh
Thanh Thúy is 1.90m tall while Như Quỳnh is only 1.75m, but their differences go beyond just height. Surprisingly, even professionally, Thanh Thúy and Như Quỳnh are following opposite trajectories.
Just two years ago, when Thanh Thúy was at her physical and performance peak, she was always the main scorer and key attacker for the Vietnamese women's volleyball team. Như Quỳnh was often a substitute for "4T" at that time.
In Vietnam’s team competitions, Coach Tuấn Kiệt always positioned Thanh Thúy as the starting main attacker and number one hitter, while Như Quỳnh was usually brought in briefly to replace Thanh Thúy when she needed a rest or was very tired and physically drained.
Như Quỳnh is replacing Thanh Thúy, becoming the main attacking spearhead of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team.
Thanh Thúy was not only the top scorer for Vietnam in 2023 but also frequently impressed with her versatile and flexible ball handling. Sometimes she delivered thunderous spikes, sometimes delicate tips, sharp cross-court hits, or technically skilled blocks that scored points.
At that time, Như Quỳnh mainly just spiked repeatedly, lacking variety and finesse in playmaking, which often led to her being blocked during net attacks.
However, everything started to change in 2024 when Thanh Thúy suffered a knee injury, had to take a long break, and could no longer maintain her jumping ability and hitting power after returning. Meanwhile, Như Quỳnh was given more starting opportunities by Coach Tuấn Kiệt and, together with Bích Tuyền, became one of the most important attackers for the Vietnamese women's volleyball team.
Như Quỳnh frequently ranked among the top scorers for the national team and improved her ball control to be softer and more graceful. Beyond just powerful spikes, the 2002-born main attacker regularly performed skillful drops and placed balls into open spaces, surprising opponents.
