Trần Thị Thanh Thúy asserts her class at the World Championship

Despite not being in top form because of injury, Trần Thị Thanh Thúy consistently demonstrates her high level in important games.

The Vietnam women's volleyball team no longer has a chance to advance in the 2025 Women's World Championship after a 0-3 defeat to Germany last night on August 25. This outcome was not too surprising as it was their first time on this big stage, and coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt’s squad had to face a very tough group including Germany and Poland — two of the world’s top teams.

Nevertheless, our girls delivered outstanding performances, proving their capability on the international stage. While the opening match against Poland highlighted Vi Thị Như Quỳnh’s excellent scoring ability, the second game against Germany was a shining moment for captain Trần Thị Thanh Thúy — who had recently faced criticism from some fans due to inconsistent form over the past two years.

Against Germany’s formidable blockers like Camila Weitzel, Lina Alsmeier, and Marie Schoelzel, Thanh Thúy still managed to make an impact. According to statistics on the FIVB official website, "4T" shone with 17 points, leading the scoring charts for both Vietnam and the entire match. The star from VTV Bình Điền Long An was also the only Vietnamese player to score over 10 points in this match.

In 2023 — when we shocked Asia by reaching the top 4 in the continental championship and also the top 4 at ASIAD 19 — Trần Thị Thanh Thúy, with her excellent physical condition, was truly a nightmare for any opposing blockers. "4T" utilized her superior height along with smart play, diverse scoring skills, and challenging serves to lead Vietnamese women's volleyball to historic milestones.

Things gradually worsened when "4T" suffered a knee injury, which prevented her from maintaining high scoring form and caused difficulties during her overseas stints in Turkey and Indonesia. However, with her latest performance against Germany — the world’s 11th ranked team — Thanh Thúy still proved she has what it takes to carry Vietnam’s offense in coming years, with the immediate goal of winning gold at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand later this year.
