Details many people overlook when the Vietnam women's volleyball team competed against Poland and Germany at the World Championship

The Vietnam women's volleyball team made a strong positive impression in their matches against Germany and Poland at the 2025 World Championship, but there was an important detail many overlooked.

Vietnam relied excessively on wing attacks against Germany and Poland

Looking back at the two matches against Germany and Poland, we can see that Vietnam’s women’s volleyball team attacked too much from the wings. Our main offensive focus was on the left side (position 4) with Như Quỳnh and Thanh Thúy. On the right side (position 2), Kiều Trinh and Nguyễn Thị Uyên were used depending on the moment.

They achieved some effectiveness but were also frequently blocked and lost many points. This is not surprising since both Germany and Poland have huge blockers, mostly around 1.90m tall, with some players reaching 2m or taller.

The attacking angles were limited, the plays became exposed due to slow approach and passing, and with opponents being tall and setting up double blocks, Vietnam’s outside hitters and opposites faced numerous difficulties.

Vietnam relied excessively on wing attacks against Germany and Poland

This was a scenario we expected, so Coach Tuấn Kiệt should have directed the team to use more quick attacks from the middle blocker in position 3.

Ideally, Lâm Oanh should have set more quick balls to Bích Thủy and Nguyễn Thị Trinh to execute fast middle attacks and diversify the offense. However, in both matches against Germany and Poland, we used very few quick middle attacks.

This made Vietnam’s play more predictable and caused more difficulties in scoring points.

Another problem was that our outside hitters and opposites moved very little, often staying near the sidelines, making it harder to surprise opponents who had already set up double blocks to stop them.

Due to the height disadvantage, the only way to beat the block is for Vietnam’s outside hitters and opposites to attack faster and actively move inside to find open spaces.

The setter also needs to coordinate smoothly in these situations. This is something we need to train more in the future to create breakthroughs against tall and experienced opponents.
