(Volleyball results) - The Vietnam women's volleyball team faced a disappointing loss in their last group match at the 2025 World Championship, playing against Kenya, currently ranked 23rd worldwide.
Set 1: Vietnam 23-25 Kenya
Although both Vietnam and Kenya had no chance to advance, they treated this match with great respect as a final farewell to the fans of this year's World Championship. Both sides played fiercely, exchanging points continuously until the final sprint of the set.
Kenya's tall blocks and powerful playstyle challenged Vietnam, allowing the opponent to take the lead. Even with Vi Quynh’s return and her efforts to equalize, the African team performed excellently in the remainder of the set, capitalizing on set-point opportunities to win 1-0.
Set 2: Vietnam 22-25 Kenya
The second set remained intense as both teams fought point by point. Kenya continued to demonstrate strong blocking and serving skills, while Vietnam relied heavily on attacks to keep pace. Despite great effort, Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s players struggled against Kenya’s tall block.
In the crucial final points of the set, Kenya showed greater composure by effectively seizing opportunities to close the set with a narrow 25-22 victory. After the unfortunate loss in set 2, Vietnam fell behind 0-2 overall and had to win the next set to keep their hopes alive.
Set 3: Vietnam 18-25 Kenya
Entering the third set, Vietnam was forced to win to maintain hope but faced many difficulties against Kenya’s solid blocking. The African team scored 7 block points, while Vietnam failed to earn any from blocking. Although Vietnam’s attack was slightly more effective (10 points versus 9), they committed numerous errors, especially in finishing plays.
Kenya continued to leverage their physical advantage and aggressive style, maintaining stable control of the game without losing rhythm. Despite Vietnam scoring 2 points from serving and trying to catch up, the blocking disparity caused Vietnam to tire at the end of the set. Consequently, Kenya won 25-18, concluding the match with a 3-0 overall score.
At 17:00 on August 27, the Vietnam women's volleyball team will play their final group stage match of the 2025 World Championship against Kenya, ranked 23rd globally. Both teams have lost their previous two matches in Group G, so this encounter is more about pride than qualification.
Before the tournament began, Vietnam’s women’s team held a friendly match against Kenya in Dong Anh (Hanoi). Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet experimented with several lineups to assess his players’ form but still secured a 4-0 win. However, the rematch on the world’s biggest stage will surely be much tougher.
The African team also achieved a historic set win against Poland, currently ranked third in the world. This shows they can cause surprises if opponents become complacent. Therefore, the Vietnamese players must forget their previous friendly victory, stay fully focused, and prepare thoroughly to aim for a positive result in their farewell match.
