The Vietnam women's volleyball team suffered a defeat after being blocked 21 times by their opponent, with FIVB providing a special commentary.

The International Volleyball Federation identified the reason why the Vietnam women's volleyball team lost 0-3 to Kenya.

The Vietnam women's volleyball team concluded the World Championship with three defeats and only one set won. In the last match against Kenya, Coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt's squad lost 0-3 (23-25, 22-25, 18-25). Despite having previously won against this opponent in a friendly, Vietnam was completely countered this time, scoring 63 points, of which 25 resulted from Kenya's mistakes. Vi Thị Như Quỳnh was the only athlete to exceed 10 points (12). Kenya recorded 21 points from blocks, with Veronica Adhiambo being the standout with 19 points.

After the game, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) commented: "In the Group G clash in Phuket on Wednesday, Kenya created a 'blocking party' with 21 successful blocks, celebrating their first-ever victory against an Asian team at the World Championship. In the previous two tournaments, Kenya had won against Mexico (2018) and Cameroon (2022). Meanwhile, the Vietnam women's volleyball team finished the competition in 4th place, without any wins in their first World Championship appearance."

Kenya women's volleyball team excels in blocking

"Kenya made many unforced errors but compensated by outperforming their opponent in all three scoring categories, especially at the net defense with a block score of 21-3, sealing an impressive 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-22, 25-18)," FIVB continued.

"Outside hitter Veronica Adhiambo scored the most points in the match with 19, including three blocks and one ace. Middle blocker Belinda Nanjala Barasa had 5 blocks, totaling 13 points. The 18-year-old hitter Malyne Terry Tata contributed 12 points. Middle blocker Gladys Ekaru shone with 6 blocks, becoming the best blocker of the match. On the Vietnam side, outside hitter Vi Thị Như Quỳnh was the most effective scorer with 12 points," FIVB confirmed.

"The lesson we learned here is that anything is possible. We just need to stay focused and we can win big matches," Kenya's head coach Geoffrey Omondi Onyango told VBTV.
