Coach Tuấn Kiệt made decisions about two Vietnamese female volleyball stars, prompting many fans to question.
The Vietnam women's volleyball team ended their run at the 2025 World Championship, leaving fans feeling disappointed and regretful.
We lost 1-3 to Poland, 0-3 to Germany, and 0-3 to Kenya. In all three matches, there were moments that many supporters found troubling regarding Coach Tuấn Kiệt’s decisions.
Firstly, in every match, he gave urgent instructions whenever Vietnam lost consecutive points and faced difficulties. At times, he directly blamed the setter, criticizing Lâm Oanh or Kim Thoa for poor ball handling.
Coach of the Vietnam women's volleyball team, Mr. Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt
However, as in all previous games and tournaments, Coach Tuấn Kiệt never gave feedback, guidance, or reminders to Trần Thị Thanh Thúy, and in all three matches against Germany, Poland, and Kenya, he allowed Thanh Thúy to play the entire match.
It wouldn’t be an issue if Thanh Thúy always performed well. But in the matches against Poland and Kenya, her attacks were very ineffective. In both games, she almost only hit the ball but was blocked many times.
Her jumping ability was no longer strong, and her hits lacked power compared to before. Whenever she had the ball, Thanh Thúy would hit it—near the net or far from it—always striking directly toward opponents who were already blocking, often with double blocks. She rarely hit along the sidelines at the net. Thanh Thúy seldom used soft or gentle hits.
It is very confusing why Thanh Thúy was continuously blocked but did not actively adjust her playing style. Equally puzzling is that despite her attacking struggles, Coach Tuấn Kiệt did not give her advice or feedback, nor did he substitute her, letting "4T" play however she wanted.
Meanwhile, the coach only allowed her to play a total of just over six sets across the three matches against Poland, Germany, and Kenya.
In the match against Germany, Như Quỳnh was taken off the court by Coach Tuấn Kiệt after missing a few balls early in the first set. In the Kenya match, for reasons unknown, Coach Tuấn Kiệt started Nguyễn Thị Uyên instead of Như Quỳnh.
Of course, the intention was for Nguyễn Uyên to handle serve reception and defense while Thanh Thúy was the main attacker. But in reality, Nguyễn Uyên struggled with serve reception, and Thanh Thúy was heavily blocked by Kenya. Only when the opponent scored 22 points and we were close to losing the first set did Coach Tuấn Kiệt bring Như Quỳnh onto the court.
It’s not without reason that many believe if Như Quỳnh had started, Vietnam might not have lost the first set (we lost 23-25 with Như Quỳnh entering late).
The events in sets two and three showed Như Quỳnh was Vietnam’s best attacker, scoring 12 points against Kenya despite playing just over two sets.
While it’s known that Thanh Thúy’s role includes attacking, serve reception, and defense, the way Coach Tuấn Kiệt used her and Như Quỳnh in this national championship caused many fans to question the logic behind it.
One player who repeatedly made errors was never given feedback or substituted. Meanwhile, the team’s most effective attacker was immediately replaced after a few mistakes, then relegated to substitute and played just over two sets in the tournament’s most important match.
