The thrilling round of 16 matches in this year’s Men's Volleyball World Championship have ended, identifying the 8 teams moving on to the quarterfinal stage — among them, one Asian team.
Iran’s men’s volleyball team has impressively become the sole Asian team to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship currently held in the Philippines.
To achieve this, Iran fought a very intense match against Serbia and secured a dramatic 3-2 victory (23-25; 25-19; 24-26; 25-22; 15-9) through exceptional resilience.
The first and third sets were extremely tight, with Iran unexpectedly faltering near the end, allowing Serbia to claim narrow wins that gave them a significant advantage; however, each time Iran fell behind, the team managed to prove their strength and push the match into a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, Iran completely dominated, creating a clear lead and ultimately sealing the match 3-2 to earn their spot in this year’s World Championship quarterfinals.
Earlier, to reach the knockout stage, Iran overcame numerous challenges, including a highly emotional match against the Philippines in the decisive Group A game. Just when it seemed the host team would win, a crucial protest allowed Iran to save a match point, stay in the game, and eventually win 3-2 overall.
In a tournament where most Asian teams have disappointed (5 out of 6 were eliminated in the group stage, including Japan), Iran has been playing increasingly well. Morteza Sharifi and his teammates will next face the Czech Republic.
