Despite Bulgaria’s comeback efforts in the third set, Italy’s men’s volleyball team still achieved a convincing 3-1 victory (25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-10) to successfully defend their world championship title.
Italy started aggressively, quickly gaining a lead from the outset. Bulgaria, with strong determination, kept close by continuously chasing the score thanks to sharp attacks from Aleksandar Nikolov. Bulgaria’s blocks caused Italy difficulties, forcing them to call a timeout to make adjustments. Although Bulgaria managed to equalize and balance the match at times, Italy quickly regained form with a series of consecutive points. A well-executed combination and a precise finishing hit by Mattia Bottolo against Bulgaria’s block ended the first set 25-21, giving Italy a 1-0 lead.
Italy continued to show superiority in the second set with sharp aces, quickly building a 4-point lead. Bulgaria fought back strongly with powerful hits from Aleksandar Nikolov and Asparuh Asparuhov, temporarily leveling the score. However, Italy demonstrated superior skill in the rallies. They exploited openings in Bulgaria’s block and disrupted the opponent’s first pass with strong spikes. Although Bulgaria heavily relied on Nikolov, they couldn’t reverse the situation. Italy reached set point with two consecutive aces and closed the set at 25-17 after a serve touched the net causing Bulgaria to hesitate, increasing the score to 2-0.
