Italy’s men’s volleyball team secured their world champion status once again after beating Bulgaria 3-1 in the final of the 2025 Men’s Volleyball World Championship on the evening of September 25th.

With this victory, Italian volleyball achieved a remarkable feat as both the men's and women's teams simultaneously claimed the top podium, confirming their position as the world’s number one volleyball nation.

The Italian men’s volleyball team successfully defended their world championship title.

Before the match, Italy was favored due to their collective strength and impressive semifinal performance in which they eliminated Poland, the strongest contender. In the final, coach Ferdinando De Giorgi’s team quickly imposed their style, showing solid defense and efficient finishing. Italy dominated the first two sets, winning 25-21 and 25-17 respectively.

Bulgaria, led by the Nikolov brothers, entered the game with determination and did not give up easily. In the third set, they exploited the opponent’s weaknesses and capitalized on counterattack opportunities to win 25-17, rekindling hopes of an upset. However, that was all Bulgaria managed to achieve.

In the fourth set, Italy’s defense lost its stability while their offense became more varied and precise, closing the match with a commanding 25-10 score.

Alexander Nikolov (number 23) scored 23 points for Bulgaria.

Italy’s strength came from their all-around performance in both offense and defense. Romano remained the top scorer with 22 points at nearly 70% attack efficiency, plus 1 block and 5 direct points from serves. Bottolo also stood out, contributing 19 points including 7 aces. Michieletto, though not at his peak form, still added 11 crucial points, while middle blockers Anzani and Russo helped build a strong blocking wall at the net. Captain Giannelli orchestrated the play smoothly, enabling Italy to maintain control throughout the match.

On the other side, Bulgaria showed commendable effort, especially Alexander Nikolov with 23 points, becoming the highest scorer in the final. Atanasov added 11 points, but overall, their setter system was unstable, making it difficult to execute tactics. After their surge in the third set, Bulgaria was overwhelmed by Italy’s fast and diverse gameplay, ending the match in a dominated position.

This victory not only allowed the Italian men’s team to successfully defend their championship but also completed a brilliant year for Italian volleyball, as the women’s team had also previously claimed the title. This marks Italy’s second consecutive world championship win in men’s volleyball.
