Five Vietnamese female volleyball stars have a strong chance to achieve a special accomplishment for the first time in four years, following recent developments among rivals in an important tournament.
The women's volleyball team formerly known as the Thong Tin Military Command, now named Thong Tin Dong Bac, is on the brink of capturing the national championship for the first time since 2021.
The most traditionally successful Vietnamese women's volleyball team with 12 national titles has performed poorly in recent seasons. Before this season, Thong Tin Dong Bac had failed to secure the national championship for three consecutive years.
At the conclusion of the first phase of the 2025 national volleyball championship, their performance was still lacking, with only 3 wins and 2 losses, temporarily placing them third in the round-robin points stage.

Determined to fight for the championship, to prepare for the second phase of this year’s national volleyball championship, Thong Tin Dong Bac conducted a 10-day training camp in Shanghai, China, and also signed Irina Voronkova, the opposite hitter of the Russian women’s national team.
Coach Pham Van Long’s players are the only team to have completed a professional overseas training camp before the second phase of the 2025 national championship. Thong Tin Dong Bac also faced LPBank Ninh Binh and Geleximco Hung Yen during the round-robin stage.
Changes within the military women’s volleyball club (with coach Pham Van Long returning), combined with serious preparation (training in China) and shifts among competitors, have created a great opportunity for Thong Tin Dong Bac to win the national championship for the first time since 2021.
It should be noted that coach Pham Van Long has clearly enhanced Thong Tin Dong Bac’s performance through a more unified playing style compared to recent seasons, alongside impressive displays by opposite hitter Nguyen Thi Phuong.
Just as Thong Tin Dong Bac is progressing positively and well-prepared, several other strong teams are experiencing personnel changes. Vietinbank will miss opposite hitter Dang Thi Hong, which will certainly reduce their attacking power given their already limited roster.
VTV Binh Dien Long An no longer has opposite hitter Tran Thi Thanh Thuy (currently competing in Japan’s national league), which casts doubts on their attack, while their blocking remains underwhelming.
Hoa Chat Duc Giang Lao Cai lost opposite hitter Tran Tu Linh, who is recovering from knee surgery. Lastly, LPBank Ninh Binh’s coaching staff confirmed that Bich Tuyen will not play in the second phase of the 2025 national volleyball championship, significantly impacting their attacking strength.
Although 7 out of 8 teams have recruited foreign players, Thong Tin Dong Bac is highly rated for having Irina Voronkova, the current opposite hitter of the Russian women’s national volleyball team, standing 1.90 meters tall and bringing rich top-level experience.
Beyond a quality foreign player, Thong Tin Dong Bac also includes five national team members: libero Ly Ly, middle blocker Pham Thi Hien, outside hitter Kieu Trinh, setter Lam Oanh, and opposite hitter Nguyen Thi Phuong. This domestic roster is also considered strong compared to other teams competing in the second phase of this year’s national championship.
With these favorable conditions and advantages, the opportunity for Thong Tin Dong Bac to return to the highest position in Vietnamese women's volleyball is truly becoming wide open.
