Outside hitter Michal Kubiak unexpectedly got injured just minutes into the match between Ho Chi Minh City Police and Bien Phong on October 10 at the 2025 National Volleyball Championship.
The match between Ho Chi Minh City Police and Bien Phong in the second phase of the 2025 National Volleyball Championship ended with an unexpected outcome. Although considered a top contender for the title, the police team suffered a heavy blow when foreign player Michał Kubiak was injured early in the game, leading to a swift 0-3 loss to Bien Phong.
Kubiak, who has twice won the world championship with Poland’s national team, was expected to be the “leader” for Ho Chi Minh City Police in their quest for their first national title. However, shortly after the match began, during a defensive play in the back row, he suddenly fell and had to leave the court.
Subsequent diagnosis confirmed that Kubiak sustained a spinal injury and will have to miss the remainder of the tournament.
Losing their main attacking weapon caused Ho Chi Minh City Police’s gameplay to stagnate. The other foreign player, Luka Tadic (Serbia), was unable to make a significant impact, while the domestic offense lacked breakthroughs against Bien Phong’s solid block. Despite their efforts in every rally, Ho Chi Minh City Police lost 0-3 with scores of 20/25, 17/25, and 23/25, finishing second in the group stage.
After the game, coach Duong Tan Vinh expressed his regret: “Kubiak has been diagnosed with a spinal injury and cannot continue playing. This is a major loss, but the whole team must come together to overcome it. We have no choice but to tighten our spirit and focus on the semifinal.”
According to the bracket results, Ho Chi Minh City Police will face The Cong Tan Cang in the semifinal, while Bien Phong — undefeated in phase 2 — will play against LPBank Ninh Binh or Sanest Khanh Hoa. Despite still having a strong squad, Ho Chi Minh City Police will need to adjust their tactics without their best attacker.
