When the referee blew the whistle to start the match between the US and Paraguay on June 12th in Inglewood, Los Angeles, one little-mentioned detail was that SoFi Stadium, a $5.5 billion venue, had its name removed from all official FIFA signage and graphics. Instead, a neutral name was used: "Los Angeles Stadium". Companies that paid hundreds of millions of dollars for naming rights, according to a FIFA official, were "unhappy but had no way to prevent it".
